Hi, I just bought a 07 Mustang GT w/a Stick and sometimes I think that I moved the knob to 1st but when I let off the clutch it starts to grind the gears because I'm all the way into 1st gear. Has anyone else had happen? This is my first manual car.
It's happened twice to me, and I've driven stick since 1966.
I've noticed that the lever feels like it moves two notches toward the dash when it is in the correct position. If I only feel one notch, I know I haven't shifted correctly.

It's prolly not in all the way...you need to make sure you depress the clutch all the way to the floor...sometimes it feels like you pushed it in all the way, but if you push the clutch in more it will allow the stick to go all the way into first.

yea i agree, i have an 06, feel the same thing sometimes, think im in first and its not engaged all the way, just the way this car is. and just as stlwagon says, i miss third on harder shifts as well, a hurst is in my future though, just wish i could find a black ball for it that looks like their white one.
When I first received my 05, I had the same problem. I found the shift to be somewhat 'notchy', especially when going into first. After driving it for a while, it stopped happening to me. Part of it may be that the bushings and so forth wore a little, but I'm guessing that I got used to the shifter (it has been a number of years since I drove a stick) and I was more comfortable pushing the stick all the way into first.
The stupid question I would ask first is, how fast are you going when trying to put it in 1st? The transmission is blocked from going into 1st at higher speeds to prevent catastrophic failures. I have never had this problem, but I also don't shift into 1st until I'm nearly stopped

I have had the same thing happen to me as well. After backing out of my garage I shift into 1st (I'm stopped not rolling certainly not going forward to fast) and even though I KNOW I put it in first it didn't "stick" (Pun intended). I just re-engage the clutch and push it into gear and go on my merry way. I'm glad to hear others experance the same thing. Thought I had lost the ability to drive a stick. I will invest in th Herst shifter soon as after reading others I look forward to smooth shifting.

Basically that is what I do now as well. Now that I know it will not go in if I don't. Past manuals I haven't had that problem. My 98 Stang was a manual and it shifted a lot smoother.
