Unhappy Help, car stuck at 8,000 RPM

The other day i was getting on the highway, put my car into 5th gear, next thing you know my tach went up to 8000rpm and wouldnt come down, my mats werent stuck, my car was speeding up, and my breaks couldnt be pressed in. I had to turn the key off and use my e break , and went i came to a stop in the breakdown lane, i put my car into neutral, made sure my pedal wasnt stuck and tried to start my car back up, and it went right up to 8000rpm again. I had to get towed to the nearest dealership, but by the time they got to check my car (3 days later) my battery went dead and they said it erased all the codes and they couldnt find anything wrong. Anyone know what could have caused this?

Brakes couldn't be pushed in? really?

8000? I'd first of all be concerned about the fact the rev limiter should have kicked in around 6700.

If it's under warranty, the dealership should run it through an electrical check at N/C. The thottle position sensor sounds messed up but if your battery dies in 3 days you've got bigger problems than that.

good luck....

If your tach registered 8k ACTUAL rpm's, you probably blew your motor. If you didn't it was a miracle.

If your brakes simultaneously failed, I find the story hard to believe. You have 2 seperate hydraulic circuits that will work even with the motor revving very high. For both of them to fail simultaneously with the fly-by-wire throttle sticking WOT is so unlikely as to be ludicrous. Particularly if your emergency brake ultimately worked.

I suspect the following actually happened:

Your throttle stuck in WOT (could be a variety of reasons, even some mechanical, but I still say you're lucky beyond belief not to have destroyed the motor).

Then you turned off the motor.

THEN you tried the brakes, and without boost, they didn't work very well (this happens to power brakes with no motor running). They were working SOME, just with a VERY hard pedal. You then used your ebrake to stop completely.

Have you done any modificaitons to the car?

Someone figure out what warp speed he was traveling at while spinning 8k in 5th gear. I smell a troll.

Could well be a troll - that old "runaway acceleration and the brakes didn't work" garbage went out with the Audi 1000's (and didn't occur back then, either, no matter WHAT the "victim" said).

Of course, wouldn't be the first time someone panicked and wrecked a car just because the throttle got stuck. I helped repair a living room wall in a house where a lady parked her Buick who claimed her brakes failed. Her husband had the car's brake checked, and they were in perfect shape.

The throttle pedal and frozen panick were what drove that lady into her house. Witnesses (including a very disgusted husband) saw the car hurtle down the driveway with the motor roaring and the brake lights never blinked. She was lucky her driveway was short.

He told me she probably dropped her cigarette in her lap when she took the turn into the drive.

Hmmm... 8000 in 5th gear. Sounds more like a tach or electrical failure to me. 8000 in 5th is all but a physical impossibility.

Its a Star Trek episode. Either a transporter or holodeck malfunction.

Probably due to the nefarious work of some Klingon.

First problem for a first time newbie poster?

If its not a troll he's delusional.

Well I suppose we need to give him the benefit of the doubt until all the facts are available.

Your brakes wouldn't work either at 233.7 mph

I know you S197 guys have that drive-by-wire control, maybe it could be connected to that part of the computer system?

At that speed I don't think the mustang is aerodynamically capable of that speed and stay on the road if it could and where were the other cars on the highway?

I only have 250 some miles on my new car but I'm not real enthused about the drive by wire.

If Ford wants to turn its self around then they need to change the attitude of the dealers helping the owners of what keeps them in business.

Default how do you say it B*LLSH*T!!!!!!!

being done with that.

When I was in my senior year, on senior day my friends and I went to Lake o' the Pines in east Texas from Shreveport La., a trip of about 60 miles. Anyway as we were driving to the lake, a buick skylark came blazing by us. About 4 miles down the road this buick was on the side of the road, the doors were all open and there were 4 guys standing around it with the motor screaming and popping and on its way to motor heaven.........it was the funniest thing I think I have ever seen in my entire life..........It does seem their brakes worked and they did get stopped, but I guess the fools didn't think of turning off the key.

I have a question though. this was about a '71 model. Could the motor continue to run if it were at WOT and the key was turned off?

I don't think so unless it's dieseling. You cut the power, it shouldn't run even if it was stuck at WOT.

This same thing happened in my girlfriends 2002 Cougar.

I got a call one day from work that she was stranded out in the country on some back road and every time she started her car back up, it would instantly rev up to 6500 RPMs and hang there.

I took off her AEM intake, looked inside her throttle body, and an o-ring had popped off her intake and had gotten lodged inside her throttle body, keeping the blades partially open.

Had that o-ring not gotten stuck inside the throttle body... poof goes the engine...

Actually, it occurred to me that someone might have tried to "fix" the fly by wire or even replace it with a juryrigged cable.

Assuming its not a troll, which I suspect it is.

Interesting problem, if real, of course.
