Default 2007 Mustang GT: Clank sound when shifting

When my car is not warmed up I tend to hear a clanking sound when I shift from 1 to 2nd. It sounds like a hell of a lot of backpressure from the exhaust with a minor clank. It is quite loud but only does it when the engine is cold. It will only happen once and not again until I stop the car and let it sit for a couple of hours and it only happens from 1st-2nd. It also is when I am disengaging the clutch from 1st.Could it be a throwout bearing?

Tough to say... Are you sure it's not exhaust noise? Could be caused by the exhaust hanger isolators on the trans cross member. TSB 06-04-01.

Tap the hanger isolator with a hammer and see if it rattles. If it sounds solid, it's something else. Something else to check for is missing bolts on the bottom of the transmission bell housing.

I'm just throwing ideas out there. Could very well be the clutch--flywheel or pressure plate or even the input shaft. Tough to say.

Thanks I guess the best way to get it fixed is to let it keep doing it until it breaks

I have the same issue after cold starts. it always goes away if you let the car warm up a little, I believe that it is just the exhaust and the car warming up.

I never thought it was much to worry about. If you start you car and let it run for about 30 seconds or more before driving off, it shouldn't happen. If it does, and it really bothers you, bring it in to ford and have them look at it!
