Ignition key replacement

Just went to the local ford dealer to see about getting another ignition key made. Was told since it has a computer security chip in it it would cost $130. Freaked me out. Is there any other place that can make one of these keys for less, or is there a way around this security system so a regular key can work?

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated, hate to spend this much on a key when it could go for a mod.
Thanks

If you have two keys on hand you can program your own key that you can get for $10-20 and get cut for $10.

If you don't have 2 keys for programming I believe you have to go to the dealer.

5twenty, only have one key, but how do you program you own key if you have two????? Because if I have to pay out the a$$ for another key you can bet I am going to make several spares.

There is a procedure (in the owner's manual I believe) that shows you how to program new keys. However you need 2 keys that are already programmed to complete this procedure. You'll still have to buy a blank key, but you can find those on eBay for $10-20 and you can get it cut for $10. It's the programming that's the pain. If you only have one key I'm pretty sure you need to go to the dealer and pay the $130.

Funny, I was just researching this very issue cause I think I misplaced my first set. I ordered 2 key blanks from ebay as well as a replacement key fob. I think I will wait til i lose my 2nd key before I go in and have the 2 blanks cut and programmed at the dealer. This really sucks. For $20, I would recommend anybody to get a couple blanks and program them yourself for free. I hate having to pay for my own carelessness.

To be safe I bought 2 Ford chipped keys off of ebay for $20.00, had them cut at the local Ace Hardware for $3.00 and then programmed them per the owners manual and they work fine. Cheap insurance for if you ever lost one of the 2 originals.

They are not the first misplaced set, but it seems they are the first set I can't find later. I want to give myself more of a chance to find them before I hand money to a dealership. When I wrote my other post, I was just being pessimistic about the whole ordeal.

I once had a girlfriend who lost her keys, on schedule, every 60 days. To her it was just normal. It drove me crazy. I can't recall ever losing a set of keys. I lost a wallet once when I left it on top of my car and drove away, but never keys. Knock on wood. I have a spare set just in case. That is planning is planning for if you lose your keys. But planning for WHEN you lose your keys......

I have an extra FOB programmed for my car making it 3 that are functional. I remember reading some where that 3 is the max you can do.

In fact I also have 3 FOBS programmed for my g/f 05 Mustang.
