2006 Mustang GT Installing a 6 speed Manual Tranny

I have decided that I will not buy the new 2011 Mustang GT. I just can't wrap my brain around how the body style has changed so much. It just doesn't appeal to me as much as the S197 body style of the 2005-09 GT. As a result, I am going to upgrade my 2006. Will a 2006 Shelby 6 speed manual tranny fit in my 2006 GT to replace the 5-speed?

All you need is a used TR6060 trans. (under $1000), a GT500 driveshaft (I found mine for $60), GT500 shifter (under $50) & a 26 spline clutch disc (assuming you have a good PP) & you are good to go. The tranny mount & throwout bearing is the same as the 5 speed.

Obama whines that we don't build stuff like the Hoover Dam anymore. With his EPA in charge nothing CAN get built.....ANYMORE!

OrangeCrush,

That is what I was looking for. Will the TR6060 have all the fittings that match up where the 5 speed did? Do I need to make any mods to make it work. I plan on upgrading the clutch. I have 110000 on the original at the moment.

I'm on my 3rd '05-'09 'Stang and can't wait 'til the current one is paid down enough to trade for an '11.

Every inch of the new Pony appeals to me more than all three my S197's did, and by every single metric, the '11+ is a better car.

Oh... and my new '11+ will include a 6 speed in its base price, no hacking required

Saleen put the TR6060 behind the 4.6 from their factory & if you check Ebay you can find the instruction manual that gives a step by step.

SALEEN Mustang 6 Speed Tremec Trans Conversion Manual: eBay Motors (item 360263941608 end time Oct-15-10 12:35:45 PDT)

It's supposed to bolt right in as long as you have the correct clutch & this is the one Saleen put in from the factory. It's a Spec Stage 3+ with the 26 spline disc. I got a left over one from Saleen still in the box for a third of what they want now but those dried up a while ago.

SPEC Ford Mustang GT 2006 2007 4.6L Stage 3+ Clutch 4.6: eBay Motors (item 280465478749 end time Oct-12-10 14:13:56 PDT)

I still need to get the manual myself to see if I missed anything but it's a bolt in deal with no cutting or hacking required.

What are advantages of 6sp manual? Is it cost effective to change from 5sp manual ?

The TR6060 is rated to 600 RWHP for one thing but will handle much more. It also is a double overdrive which means the RPM drop is much less when going from 4th to 5th & then to 6th. This is much better for racing as you can run 4.10 gears & get a slightly lower RPM on the highway but the biggest difference is keeping the engine in the powerband once you leave 4th gear. There is a HUGE step going from 1to1 to overdrive on the 5 speed.

The GT500 TR6060 has ratios of
1st: 2.97
2nd: 1.78
3rd: 1.30
4th: 1.00
5th: 0.80
6th: 0.63

TR-3650 used in the 2005+up Mustang GT has ratios of
1st: 3.38
2nd: 2.00
3rd: 1.32
4th: 1.00
5th: 0.67 although these overdrive ratios slightly differ depending on rear axle ratio.

As far as being cost effective.....I have everything to swap over for under $1300 (stock trans & driveshaft, Motorsport shifter & Spec clutch) but it took a lot of searching & almost 2 years to round up those bargains. It can probably be done under 2K easily.

Orange,
Thanks for all of the great info. You've made up my mind that this is the way to go for me.

Mad4Macs
I respect your opinion. I've talked with a few stang enthusiasts, and some like the new body style while others don't. It's a personal choice. It's all about what makes you happy in the end. I just don't want to spend another $40k on a new car when I can upgrade my current one for about half that or less.

I still haven't heard from anyone that has installed the Edelbrock Eforce supercharger. Any takers. Has anyone replaced the stock internals on the 4.6L and how did that work out.
