2005 Mustang GT - Bound up automatic shifter - help!
Well, it looks like I've already got my first mechanical problem with the new GT, I've had for less than 10 days, now
Something is broken, or bound up in the automatic shift linkage. The black boot, sliding piece, "traveling" dust cover, or whatever you call it, has separated from the shift lever. (see the gap, in picture # 1) There is a visible gap between it and the lever. It still moves, but not freely, nor correctly. The result is that the "pointer" also shows the wrong gear, and I am unable to downshift to the lower gears. (the car is actually in Drive in picture #2).
Has anyone else had this experience? Do you think the shift cable needs to be adjusted, or is Ford going to sell me an entire new shift handle assembly? This sucks. I can't belive my new 'Stang is jacked up, already.
yeah, the dust cover is off track, and that can mess up the gear indicator. i had that problem once after my g/f accidentally dumped some mountain dew on it, it started binding up on the bottom (i got stick now, so no more issue w/ that )
i've fixed this before, but it's not permanent usually. what happens is ford pretty much laid the teeth for the dust cover in a couple of little tracks, but has nothing in place to keep them on those tracks. u can open everything up yourself in a few minutes to realign it, and make sure everything's clean, if you're comfortable doing so. if not, the stealership may have to get a new one in there for you.

Well, it looks like I'm going to have to spend about $475 fixing my new (to me) GT, before I ever make the first payment.
Apparently this is a somewhat common problem. The local Ford dealer traced the VIN, and said there have been three new and improved part numbers for my shift lever. Mine is an early (Jan '05) build date.
I have a feeling that even if I managed to take it apart and somehow hack it back together, it 'aint gonna last. Anyway I guess it's time to buck up and buy the new $301.00 shift lever and have Ford install it, (with a little warranty at least). I plan on keeping the car for quite a while, and not being able to shift right, kinda sucks.
Hopefully it's a one off deal, and this thing turns out to be a dependable daily driver. It looks like I'm going to be waiting a while longer for that Cold Air Intake and Tuner....
Stars is totally right you should spring for that rachet shifter. I vowed that if that ever happend to mine i would get that TCI shifter!

I haven't heard any bad things yet and the install is really easy if you have a jack and stands otherwise it should really not take any shop more than 2 hours to install. I really want one because my shifters top was peeling off and I have it temp fixed with a shaped piece of aluminum lol. Let us know what you do.

I tried the TCI in my car. It was defective. When I installed it last winter it never read the correct gear, stretched my transmission cable, and on top of that the pin inside the shifter broke leaving me stuck in park and broken down not being able to get the car into gear. Customer service at TCI was pretty useless not having much information or help to give when I was trying to troubleshoot the problem.
Some people may have a better experience, the shifter was in fact cool when it somehwat worked and looked great.
