k&N drop in filters??

Just wondering about K&N drop in filters for the standard air box on my 2007 Mustang GT?? Are they worth the money? Are they any good? I understand they are good for the life of the car?Do they come with some sort of cleaning product or is that sold separately? any other benefits!

The only benefit is it will hurt your wallet less over time without having to buy paper filters. I had one and noticed no gains of any sort. The cleaning product is sold separately but should allow you to clean it 4 or 5 times a kit.

I recently switched my factory filter to Purolator paper filter. Try
that vs K'N's filter.

No benefit to a drop-in K&N at all. If you look carefully through one that has been run for a while, you will see little specks of light where there is no filtering. The pleated paper filter in the stock airbox is large enough to not be a restriction in the stock system. Just replace it regularly and you'd be better off.

I think your money would be better spent on a Cold Air Intake.

With the K&N filter you get a nice sticker that warns subsequent owners and the lube monkeys at your service place not to throw it away.

If you do the figures for K&N plus the cleaning kit v. the standard replacement intervals you'll find they come out pretty close to even, and the cleaning routine is not a real pleasurable experience.

Pays you money, makes you choice.

You don't get much (if any) noticeable performance. The cleaning kit is separate for like $15. I think they recommend checking the filter every 10k miles. The true value is their good for a LONG time (with proper cleaning and care). Looking at AM website, you get get one for like $45. I haven't bought a stock air filter in a long time as I have a CAI...but I will estimate them at $7-15 (depending on brand). So do the math, changing your filter when Ford recommends every 6,000 miles ... in under 30,000 miles you've made up your money on the filter. I think K&N says their good for like a million miles or something...I've never used one over 150k, so I can't say if it would last that long. Figure it should pay for itself after 4 OEM filter replacements.
