Yeah I just had my windows tinted and they too said there was no need for moleskin. They said the windows were warrantied if there was an issue. Check out this link before you buy. The link you listed didn't show the product.
I wanted to get my wondows tinted. I went to a major reputable window tinting place here in Tampa. $169. for the side windows, rear quarters and rear window. Asked about moleskin, "no we do not do that - if you want it - go to the dealer".
Went to dealer, Ernie Haire FOrd and new Ford concept - Quick Lane. Same windows - $200.. but "yes, we do change the strips on the front windows to moleskin".
So I guess Ford has learned how to stop the scratching. Also asked if there were any specific care instructions - I had to ask - "yes, do not raise or lower the windows for 3 days". Good think I asked, it has to do wtih making sure the stuff dries. I can wait 3 days - the job they did looks great - and it is guaranteed against scratches etc. For the additional price of the moleskin - heck, the major money had been spent.

I have noticed (I don't have them tinted) on my windows that there are tiny vertical scratches on the top, so I wouldn't trust putting a tint on them without some sort of protection.

I pointed that out to the guys that installed my tints. But somehow they cleaned the window and it is perfectly clear. My 2000 Mustang has vertical scratches or marks as well. I think this eventually happens to all cars that use a cheap felt-like material. Maybe moleskin is the standard on your "better" cars.
The tint place placed masking tape over the window switches so I wouldn't roll them down. They said not to do it for two days, but the documentation they gave me said 4 days. 4 days it is....as I always do what's written than what's said.
I watched the videos in that writeup... TacoBill did an outstanding job on that install write-up. The video clip really shows when he means by dont be afraid of pulling hard.
I will get my tint installed this weekend and wait for the moleskin to arrive.... I go on vacation next tuesday, so that will give the tint 2 weeks to set before I roll down the windows and put on the skin.
Will be taking my wifes new car to her. Her big susprise.

i installed the moleskin on my car before i got my windows tinted. i already knew how to remove the door panels...as i do car audio install for a living, but i looked at the instructions that came with it and its pretty good. its an easy install and my tint has 0 scratches.

Has anyone ever tried the Cheap Moleskin ($5.25) versus the well-known brand ?

I would like to say that after reading your post, I took my 2005 Ford Mustang GT Convertible to Ernie Haire Ford's Quick Lane. I explained the window tint problem to them OVER AND OVER and mentioned your post. They said they were going to put in the felt, however after arriving for my appointment, the tint guy showed up 2 hours late. They charged me $210, and cut into the rear window defrost grid. After examining the slice into the defrost grid, and before leaving the lot, I turned on the rear window defroster, and a burn mark instantly developed where the slice was made. They told me to come in in a few days and they would give me a tube of some stuff that would fill in the sliced area. I returned, and they still didn't have it. I called several times the following days later and finally received it more then a week later. I applied it, and thought it was fixed. Getting back to the felt. I examined the vehicle before leaving the lot, and it didn't look like they had installed the felt. Without removing the door panel, it was hard to say if they did or not. However, they assured me that they removed the panel and installed the felt. It was hard to believe since the vehicle was only back there for about an hour. I gave the tint about 2 weeks to cure in my garage before rolling down the windows. About 2 or 3 weeks after that the scratches started to show up. I called the dealership right away and nobody answered. I tried calling for several days until I finally took a trip down there and found out..... They went out of business. On top of that.... I live in Florida. We don't have to use the rear window defrost a lot here. About a year later I was out driving, and the rear window fogged up. I turned on the defrost, and about 5 minutes later, I hear a large pop. I thought I hit something, but then I heard a breeze, and noticed my back window had smashed into tiny peices but still held together by the window tint. You have to replace the entire convertible top when the back window gets smashed. $1300 to replace the top and another $200 to retint the windows. All out of my own pocket. Thanks Ernie Haire Ford and Quick Lane.
