I've done quite a bit of research on the CS, and there is plenty of information in regards to this special version of the Mustang GT. Some good info, and of course plenty of conflicting. Is this package truly just an appearance package or are there some small hidden performance things that Ford snuck into these? I've heard things from the likes of a slightly better gear box/shifting kit, and also a slightly bigger air inlet. Your thoughts please?
Yep, just an appearance package. Sorry, no secret hidden performance goodies. I guess that is either urban legend, or someone getting confused between what came from the factory and what someone did aftermarket.
Thinking just visuals on the Cal Mustang, did come with the polished 18 bullets I believe, so that is some performance.
The Bullet had the CAI upgrade and I believe they tweaked the motor for some more HP.
No difference in gears. Auto comes with 331 and manual 355. Same as the standard gt. And yes it comes with the optional 18" wheels and an upgraded interior. But no tweaking or performance gains over the standard gt.
Fair enough, I have an auto so the gears must be standard as some of you mentioned. My interior is of the better version two tone leather seats and the wheels too. I'm not sure if it's a unique sound to my car in particular or if all the 3 valves are tuned and designed a certain way but there's a cool little whistle seems like the way the vacuum is set up whenever I get into it.
I don't have a cold air intake. My pops is familiar with a few different mustangs of the past and he mentioned it has to do something with the way the vacuum is set up. Not exactly how the vacuum on these cars is designed but its a pretty cool sound.
I hear a whistle in mine too when I accelerate. First time I've heard that someone else hears it too in theirs. I don't have a CAI - just a regular intake.
The original California Special offering was on the 1968 Mustang. It was a part of a special promotion staged by the Southern California Ford Dealer group and featured a ducktail spoiler, sequential taillights (for a Thunderbird), and functional body side scoop - all taken from the SHelby parts bin. It also had a blacked out grille with Lucas fog lamps, twin hood locks, exclusive striping and script (CS). They came with any engine, including the base six. The GT/CS had two barrel V8, though a few were sold with the 335 hp 428 Cobra Jet engine.
2007 was the first year Ford re-offered the GT/CS (read first S197 year). It came with high profile body side stripes, rear quarter side scoops, 18" polished aluminum wheels, unique front and rear fascia, bright exhaust tips, Dark Charcoal leather-trimmed seats with either Dove or Parchment inserts, and floormats with bright badging. The GT appearance package could be combined with the CS package for 2007 and included hood scoop and engine cover with running horse logo. The 2007 CS has a chin spoiler which extends down 1.5 inches lower than that of a GT as well.
On one of the latest Counting Cars episodes, a friend of Danny's has a 68 C/S. He said there're only around 4 thousand made. I can't say I've ever seen one.
Just for your info, 3.55 rear end are std on manual in 2005-06 while auto have 3.31 (except SGT-H). Starting in 2007, both manual and auto have 3.31 as std rear end. 3.55 becomes optional on manual only.
