3.73 or 4.10 gears how much MPG?

Hey I was wondering about how much my mpg will go down if i either get the 3.73 or 4.10 gears? I basically do an even combination, I regularely get 24-25.5 mpg, and a couple times 26. If I get different gears, how many mpg's will I lose? Still don't know if I'll do this mod, I don't know if I really wanna lose alot of mpg's. Also will I have to worry about them like breaking quickly or going ka-put?

I have an auto, so which are better? I know this is a great debate, just wanna know. Thanks

The majority will tell you to get 4.10's with an auto. 3.73's with a manual. However, in your case, since it seems you do a good bit of highway driving you may want to go with the 3.73's.
I don't have any numbers for you, but someone here should.

I do a lot of highway driving (80-100+ miles/day) when I'm not laid off, but gas mileage is the least of my concerns in a muscle car, so I went with the 4.10's anyway.

yeah i do quite a bit of highway i suppose. Usually get 25 mpg, i don't drive 80 miles a day though lol. If I do drive my car, i might put on anywhere from 20-40. You're right about the muscle car mpg though.

I made a thread about MPG with 4.10s using an iPhone app. here is the link
http://www.allfordmustangs.com/forum...g-4-10s-3.html

I can get anywhere from 19-27. There are a few different factors. The biggest one I have found is how I let myself drive. If I take it easy on her, I get around 27 with mixed driving. I hardly ever get this though because I simply cannot help myself. When I do a good amount of highway and then step on it in the city when I can (cheers me up on mondays) the MPG suffers.

Check out the thread. If it gets activity ill start logging again.

BTW that was all on a 93 race bama tune.

Performance: C&L CAI with Xcal 3 Tuner. 93 Race tune by Bamachips. GT sway Bars. 8.8 Rear axle with 4.10 gears. Dual Magnaflow Exhaust.

Not performance... 7 inch In dash Pioneer DVD/touch screen deck, Shaker 500 system, Chrome taillight trim. Sequential taillights. Window tint, Viper alarm with remote start. Cobra radar detector with GPS. Black 18" bullitt wheels with Sumitomo High Performance HTR Z II Tires.

Hey John; I like the color, looks good also before you do any performance mods, do your research. Those little sixes, will run with the right mods and without power adders. You can go 4.10's without hurting mpg., as long as your not on it all the time. My 96 SVT Cobra Convertible has 4.10's in the rear, with 402rwhp and 418rwtq N/A and I get 21mpg city and highway and I can cruise at 70 - 75mph on the highway. The reason I get 21mpg. city, is that I can cruise in the city in 4th gear all day. I would definetly go with, the 4.10 gear set up even if just for better accelleration, Mike. SCT Tuner.

If you're ever gonna go with a power adder, use the 3.73's. I have 3.73's with an automatic and a Whipple. I know the 4.10's would probably help a little at the track with slicks, but the 3.73's are already hard enough to launch with. as far as highway mileage, at 70mp I am at about 2700 rpms. With 4.10's. figure about 3000. And not even considering the mileage, V8's can get pretty annoying at high rpm's on the highway.

I used to get about 25-26 with mixed driving on the stock 3.31 gears with my manual transmission 4.0. After 3.73 gears and limited slip I now get about 23-23.5 regularly. 3.73's have plenty of acceleration and not too much up top. Any more gear than 3.73 and you'll be moaning every time you have to drive the freeway for more than 15 minutes. Especially if you have an exhaust system thats loud or drones. Plus 4.10's will probably put you down to 21mpg or less.
