I have a 2008 V6 Mustang and as I was leaving work yesterday I put it in drive and it sounded like it shifted but when I gave it gas it acted like it was in neutral. It also does the same thing when you put it in reverse. I can shift threw 1st, 2nd, and 3rd and once i hit 2.5 RPM in 3rd I can shift it into drive and it'll shift through gears unless i slow down and stop then i have to shift to 3rd again then back into drive. I'm not sure what would cause this. There isn't any loud sounds and it sat outside my work for two days before I drove it and there wasn't any puddles or anything where it was parked. If anyone has ideas please let me know I don't want to take it to ford and spend a fortune, mostly because I don't have a fortune.
That's what I was afraid of. By any chance if I did it myself what parts do I need and where would be the best place to get them. I've got the tools and shop to do it just never had to rebuild this kind of transmission before.
Well there's no guarantee on what parts you will need. I'd say if you can find a book on your tranny and do a bit of research into seeing what controls what you might get a good idea of what you'll need.
As far as parts any part store should do, just find a good brand name and have fun.
First thing to check with any automatic transmission is the fluid level. It may be that simple. Next is more research and troubleshooting. Take careful notes on what it does and doesn't do, and under what conditions. Does it seem to go into Drive, then slip out? Or do the shifts from 1st to 2nd to 3rd seem firm but won't shift after that?
From the info given it could be any number of things, but I'd start by checking what you can first. Then if you don't feel comfortable with diagnosing the problem yourself, take it to a shop and have them check it out. It will cost you a few bucks, but it could be a simple band adjustment, or solenoid gone bad, etc. Good luck!
