Default 2008 Mustang GT Transmission Synchronizer Problems!

Hey all, im posting this because i just bought a brand new 2008 Black Mustang GT California Special. it has 700 miles on the vehicle and im hearing a grinding noise shifting from 2nd to 3rd. i had a mechanic drive it and he said it was a bad synchro. I had the dealer put a new synchro kit in the transmission.. and i got the vehicle back. And it still makes the same noise even after they replaced the synchro. The funny thing is, it only makes this grinding noise shifting from 2nd to 3rd, and only when the engine is cold. After about 15 minutes of running the car, it stops making the noise. Anybody have any suggestions? or have any of the same problems?

The 2nd to 3rd shift is the worst with the stock shifter. I think we've all experienced that to some degree. Haven't had any issues since I swapped mine out.

I'm surprised that the new synchro's didn't fix the problem. Maybe the whole part in the tranny is offset a little?

And congrats with the new 'Stang! Also, if this is your first black car...be prepared. It'll eat you alive just keeping up with the paint!

Default 2008 Mustang GT Transmission Synchronizer

I have the exact same car with the exact same problem. The dealer has replaced the 1st-2nd and 3rd-4th synchros and still the same grind going into 3rd gear. Today I took it back to the dealer and a new tranny has been ordered. I hope this new trany will not give the same old problem. It only has 2800 miles. The Tranny is a Tremec 3650. Anyone have more info on a fix?

i have an 08 it had 2 miles on it when i bought it she now has 14000.. i've never had the grinding problem. and i run her like i stole her. she's notchy in the morning when its cold. so i give her a min or two to let the fluids warm up a bit.

Default Same proble here!

I have an 08 and have the same problem when shifting from 2-3. I don't drive it in the winter but when it gets cold out it'll grind when the tranny fluid is cold. I started to let it warm up a little and shift very slowly when going to 3rd gear. That does the trick. I'm afraid I may have to go to the dealership though to get it fixed. I've heard many times that when the dealer changes the syncros it doesn't fix the problem. I'm hearing only tranny replacemant will fix this.

Runner3264,
I am still waiting for a my new tranny to come in for 08 GT. I have been in contact with the company and they are pulling one from the 2010 assembly line and shipping it to my dealer. I will post to this site and let everyone know how it goes. I live in Hawaii and can guarantee the cold weather has nothing to do with this problem. If you have been to the dealer and still have the problem then my advice is to get online with the Customer Relationship Center to get the ball rolling on a new tranny 800-392-3673. You can also go the Ford web site and go to how to contact them to send an e-mail. I found that the e-mail is more effective.

Hele0n, Thanks or the info. I will plan to make an appointment with the dealer then go from there.

Mine started with cold weather. As long as I shift slowly to third the first couple of shifts everything is fine.
Some on an Aussie site have speculated it has to do with the atf being too slippery for the syncro to get up to speed when it's cold.
Mine started when it got cold which is right after I installed a blower. I can always take it to the dealer but I'm pretty sure the Whipple will give them a good reason to say it's all my fault. Especially since I had to register the vin with FRPP to get the tuner. If that's the case there is a company in FL that sells rebuilt 3650's rated for 750 HP with a 26 spline input shaft for $1650. The more I think about it that's the direction I'm going anyway. When the clutch goes I'm swapping the tranny.

Mind grinds going into 5th when the tranny is cold and it is below about 30-35 outside. I want to try an aftermarket shifter to see if that helps. If not, then I'm going to flush tranny fluid, and if that finally doesn't take care of it then I will give my dealer a call.

I just noticed this recently this week. Only happens on the 2-3 shift when the trans is cold 20's-30's. It's done it twice. I just thought it was me. Has never happened any other time. Car is a black 08 GT with about 4000 on it. Not ready to take it in yet.

Exact same year and same mileage and same problem. I think Ford needs to do a recall on these trannys. Hearing it far too often. It is true with me too that if I shift it slowly the first few times I go into 3rd then it is okay after that. That is why I haven't hit up the dealer yet but I will have to in the spring. Although it won't grind then because it'll be warmer.

Well I'm happy to say I finally got my tranny replaced. I have put on about 300 miles since then and it is ok so far. The old tranny had a different part number than the new one. If any of you are interested in knowing the new and old part numbers let me know I have them. It seems to wind out the engine sooner now. The RPM is about 2000 at 40mph. Everybody knock on wood for me and good luck to you all.
