This Saturday at the Fontana Speedway, they will be having quartermile racing and I was fortunate enough to get that day off. This is the first time I take my girl to the track, the only other time I went was about 5 years ago in my 4 cylinder auto (yikes!) Ranger and that didn't work out too well (LOL)
Anyhow, I want to get the fastest time in my car without risking damage as this is my daily driver, it is an '06 GT auto that is stock- save for the Pypes Violator axleback. What would be the best RPM to launch at and should I shut off the O/D? I know these questions must sound silly, but I've never had a real car before and I want to see what she can do. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

Wish I could help, but I've got a manual. One thing for sure, turn off the Traction Control and air conditioning. If it is the tree start light (3 yelllows then green) nail it on the last yellow.

It would be a good idea to shut the O/D off. I've never raced an Auto but heres something that might help you.
Brake-torque launch/start: (1) roll to starting line and apply brakes (2) left foot firm on brake, right foot on gas (3) 3 to 5 seconds prior to the green light press on the gas to build up torque (4) slide brake foot off & floor the gas at launch/start point.
IMPORTANT NOTE: this is a bit of a strain on the tranny. BEST METHOD is to get the brake mod (line lock) that allows you to lock ONLY your front wheels with a push button after you get to the starting line ...then you apply gas until the rear wheels start to slowly spin...hit the button again, stomp gas, and you're gone!
for your first time with the car just launch off idle, turn off traction control, turn off overdrive.
Maybe after a few runs try bumping the RPM's up to around 1800 (probably won't go too much higher with the stock converter).

I don't have an auto either but if I were driving your car I would:
Turn off the traction control
Turn off the A/C
Drop the rear tires down to 20psi
Fill the front tires up to 45psi
You can turn off the OD but it probably won't try to turn on anyway
Fill up your tank. Most people will say you don't want the extra weight but I have found that if you are running street tires (not drag radials) then you are better off with the traction than the weight savings.
Don't go through the water in the burnout box\
If you do a burnout do a very, very short one. Maybe a second or two. Your stock tires are not formulated to work at "drag launch" type temperatures. If you do anything more than a tiny burnout you will overheat the outer surface of your tires and they will get slippery.
Try to line up in the tracks left by the car in front of you. Hope they had wide slicks.
Foot brake the car while depressing the gas just short of doing a brake torque. When you launch let off the brake and put the gas pedal to the wood.
Don't worry about your reaction time. All it will do at this point is take your attention away from a good launch. You don't start getting timed till you break the beams with the front tires anyway.
Don't listen to anyone elses advice. I am the smartest person in the world. I can prove it, go ahead and ask me.
And don't forget to have fun. Go out to race yourself. Don't worry about going fast. Just about every car there will be faster than yours.

That is pretty funny there!. You cant launcha stock auto at 3000 RPM. The highest it will brake torque to is around 2000 RPM.
Turn off OD, turn off T Control and Brake Tq the car up to 2000RPM. leave on the second yellow.
That will get you a decent launch.

I agree with those who said loading before leaving is counter-productive: it's fun, but those wheels will spin, which is a waste.
Slap that gas pedal when the second yellow appears. With practice you'll get close to .001 RTs, but as they say, that might not be the most important thing to focus on, first time out. Even then you might find yourself feathering the throttle to get hooked up.
No point in shifting the auto trans by hand. Especially on street tires, it will probably do better than you would.
Whether a burnout will help depends on the tires. Michelin Pilot Sport PS2s seemed to get a better grip after a 4-5 second burnout (of that one V6 rear wheel); Pirelli P Zero Nero (stock GT) tires got slicker 'n snot.
If you go faster than 15.3 I'll be disappointed.
Fontana runs quarter-miles, eh? Get there early, when the wait time between runs is likely to be shorter. I'm spoiled by the Test and Tune you can do at Qualcomm, fifteen runs or more, five minutes apart, eight if I change tunes or something; I leave when the crowd shows up and the wait gets up around fifteen minutes.
Thanks for the advice guys! I'll just see what she can do but I feel good, and the Chargers beating the snot out of the Raiders is the perfect start to my wekend..... lol!
