Default K&N filter in, HC trap out

I did my first "mod" on my Stang (I'm at 3k miles) by putting in a K&N filter and removing the Hydrocarbon trap in the air duct. That took about 15 mins using needlenose pliers to shimmy it out of there.

So far I've only driven it around town for about 3 miles, but no check engine light has come on yet. I heard somewhere that this mod was good for a few hp, but nothing really noticeable.

im going to remove the hd trap but leave the factory filter because i heard(the latest issue of MUSCLE MUSTANGS &FAST FORDS and numerous other places) that you actually lose hp with a kn filter...the air to fuel mix issue

Someone had a thread in here that provided dyno numbers from some muscle car mag, in that article the author kept saying "I cannot stress how important it is to have a reflash done when doing any intake mods with the 05 Mustang, this includes removal of HC trap or any intake/filter mods". I don't know if that is fact or fiction, I just recall seeing the thread.

HC trap removal needs a reflash, makes the engine run leaner with out it.

I tried the K&N filter and it felt like I lost HPs.

I finally sold my K&N filter on eBay for a loss and put back the stock filter.

So I would agree - you need tune with the K&N air filter.

Yeah, a while back I had put on the MMR Mass air flow intake (I did not remove the HC trap) and took it for a couple of drives - a very noticible performance gain. The engine light of course came on, as they said it would until a reflash, but the most notcible difference to me was an increase in temperature. Anyhow, I just put the stock intake back on and everything is okie dokie. I had asked on another thread about the SCT flash tune because if it something that is fairly easy to do then I'll try the MMR product again.

moral of the story - as you said - get the tune...

Default K&N Filter Question

I have seen much pro and con on whether installing the K&N filter creates a need to reflash or if it really helps gas mileage.

Can anyone clarify? I have one on order but am questioning putting it in based on the many different opinions.

Mine has been running A-OK for 2 weeks with the HC trap gone and the K&N filter in. Getting new tunes I hear will be way more risky in terms of any future warranty repairs on the drivetrain, so I'm gonna stay away from that for now. I definitely don't feel any loss of power! http://www.allfordmustang.com/forums...lies/thumb.gif

Have you had any engine lights come on?

Thanks.

You've removed the HC trap and put a K&N in without any programing and no check engine light came on?How long have you been running it like that?

I have had no check engine lights come on whatsoever. I have had the K&N filter in for one week now (thought it was 2, but actually 1 week). Last night I just did my first ever burnout and man was that SWEET. Coincidentally, my first oil change is tomorrow. I'm informing the dealer of the following issues I have (mostly minor except for the shaker)
-Shaker 1000 gets skips and bad cd rejects, just like most others out there
-Sqeally rear passenger break
-Will bring up the TSB on the fuel tank replacement
-the 2 chrome center air vent bezels on the dash are kinda noisy and creak a lot, maybe they can lubricate them or pack the tracks with grease

Cheers!http://www.allfordmustang.com/forums...lies/wavey.gif

I have had the K&N in and the filter trap out for weeks now. No engine light. I doubt that anyone can trust their seat of the pants feel for the minimal gains that these mods make. Last week I ran a 13.7 at 101 mph with a bad take 0ff at the line (it bogged) the next run I went up in smoke and ran a 13.9 without much first gear! Power loss.....I say no.....MPG gains......nothing I can tell. Keep your K&N and take out the trap or you won't keep up with me! OH, BTW, I reflashed the GT yesterday and WOW! What a differance. It was worth 400 bucks. Tomorrows track test will tell.

I'm just curious as to why you would want to even do these mods if #1; they are not proven to gain any HP without a tune, and #2; that you could very well loose HP?

Guys, YOU HAVE TO TUNE!!!

You WILL damage your engine, maybe not around the block but over time and maybe even on a cross country trip!! I am not kidding, there is so much air (much hotter 'fire') and very little fuel = lubricant! A fun fact too is that even though the flash adds fuel the car will run leaner and save you fuel (compaired to stock), but formost it will save you the engine!

I am not kidding, I have seen dyno runs live and it comes out the same every time, exhaust temp almost doubled and the fuel flow decreased from stock before the flash! Not good!!

You paid +$200 for the CAI (or some time removing the cigarett filter) for 5-15 RWHP, now spend 375 more to double that AND get a quicker throttle response and many other benefits (not to mention 8 pistons plus labor...)!!!
