Ford has just released this a TSB for the slow to fill fuel tank. The TSB # is 05-4-8 and lists a new fuel tank part number 5R3Z 9002 AA. Ford also has issued a message with part numbers for replacing the Shaker head units. The dealer needs to check your present radio suffix number and make sure its not the same number as the replacement from the radio service center. Ford is also investigating a driveline shudder on accel from a stop on 4.6 engine Mustangs and warn not to replace the driveshaft, but to call the hotline for additional diagnosis procedures.

Great post - thanks man!

So for the fuel tank fix, do I just need to schedule an appointment with my dealership and they should replace this part free of charge, yeah?
Even though the TSB has been released (I haven't read it yet) sometimes it takes awhile for the parts to get into distribution. Let your servicing dealer know about your filling problems and inform them of the TSB. Ask them how long it would take to get the new fuel tank and schedule an appointment once the new tank arrives. My Mustang was built on Feb 2nd (and was delivered on the 3rd) and it may have the updated tank design. The dealers part manager can run your VIN number on "VBOM" (VehicleBuildOfMaterials) and it may list the part number of the fuel tank installed in your vehicle, I'm going to have mine check it on Monday. This will be covered under bumper to bumper warranty...also when you take your Mustang in for the fuel tank replacement only have 1/4 or less fuel in the tank. This will make it easier for the tech to replace the tank, they won't have to access the fuel pumps from inside the car in order to drain the tank.
Update: I just read the TSB, Ford change the fuel tanks internal venting to improve the fuel flow and help reduce the fill problems. The TSB was issued on Feb 16th so all dealers should be aware of the TSB and locate using OASIS.
I just went down to my local dealer and special ordered the new fuel tank..it is on a "National back order" so they say and when it comes in they will give me a call..But, the good news is they are aware of it and will order you one!...got get yours boys!

Mine was Built Feb 05 (2/7 build week), I just went to get my first tank of gas today, I was on empty (20 miles left before no gas according to the message center), it kicked off at $6 (about 3 gals into the fill). I had to sit there mannually putting 10 cents at a time. I finally gave up at 14 gallons ($30 dollars). I doubt you have the updated fix...

Let's hope all these TSB's are also introduced immediately on the assembly line. Perhaps a silly question but can we ASSUME the factory is first place they introduce the new changes?

I would bet money that they either used up all the old "faulty" tanks before issuing the TSB or they will use them up before switching to the new part.
You can be sure that someone has done the math to see where the break point is between taking a loss on the unused tank and playing the odds as to how many new owners want their tanks replaced.
On the bright side, they are producing Mustangs as fast as they can and Ford's parts should be supplied on demand (little or no extra parts lying around before they need them) so the obsolete tanks should be long gone, into your driveway! They'll be getting mine back soon enough. I always love it when you get to stick it to the bean counters

this is my first post...Im thoroughly enjoying my new GT(silver, lt. grey int., Shaker 500, opt. wheels)
I filled up my first tank of gas the other day...it too clicked off at about $5...an old trick I used to use with my Porsche is to turn the gas nozzle upside down before resuming filling. it filled perfectly, stopping at about $33(92 oct)...
give it a try...it is annoying, but it works untill the dealer can replace it...
We've had the annoying fill ups since day 1. I was filling up the car thursday and ended up with gas all over me and the ground. It was embarassing as a few people were standing there filling up their cars and naturally looking at the Mustang and asking me questions. As soon as I got home I called the service department and told them about the filling trouble and mentioned the TSB. They ordered a replacement tank and will call me when it's in. So one new Shaker 500 and coming soon a new fuel tank. I hope i don't have to replace this car piece by piece! j/k I still love it!
