Trouble Pumping Gas It seems like almost every time I try to pump gas it acts like the tank is full even though it is empty. The pump stops and wont let me fill up. Has anyone run into this problem? |
That's really wierd. I haven't heard anything about that. You mean the pump keeps shutting off before the tank is full? Bizarre! Just kidding....everyone has that problem. Ford knows about it...do a search of the forum. Welcome to the forum. |
the first time I filled up, it did that....after I did my Porsche trich for filling the tank, it has not done it again, I can fill it normally....of course now that I say it, it will happen again... :nogrinner Chad |
That's ONE thing that hasn't gone wrong with mine. What kind of gas knozzles have this problem? Are they those crazy "recycle" types or are people having problems with the plain old-fashioned kind like I have around where I live? Just curious |

But 1st...try holding the pump handle at a lower angle. Sometimes that's all it takes. |
There's a technical service bulletin out about it - your dealer will replace your tank under warranty - I got mine (and the Sh*tter 500 CD player) replaced under warranty a week ago. |

Just for the record. I called Ford and they are very aware of the problem and are going to replace my gas tank. If any of you are having the same problem, call your dealer. |

when I picked up my car the dealer took me to the gas station to fill it up. He had to use the slowest setting, and even then it stopped once. I was thinking "oh great", but I filled it up later on full speed and no problems. Maybe it's the shape of the nozzle or something. |
I've filled up at different gas stations for a month now, and I found that the pumps that have the spring loaded plastice/rubber sheath around the nozzles can cause the premature shut off on the pump. I've filled up in NJ (where they pump your gas) and NY. One time in NJ, the pump started shutting off, so the attendant turned the nozzle upside down, and it worked after that. I will probably schedule the tank replacement anyway, just to eliminate any future problems. |
I've been experiencing this problem too. This Monday I took it in to have the tank replaced under the TSB and was told that Ford is not longer replacing the tanks for the slow fill / premature shut off problem. In other words the TSB Fix is not correcting all the cases. I called the Ford hotline to confirm what my service tech was telling me and they said the same thing. Ford is aware of the problem and they suggested I stay in contact with my tech until a new fix is issued. I also noted this problem gets worse depending on what type of pump I use. I have problems with 4 out of 5 pumps and yes, it gets very annoying. So I found a station just down the street from my house, where I can fill without trouble and I keep filling there. |
