Exclamation How HOT does the caliper get....advice?

I want to paint my brake calipers but don't want to use the red on my redfire, yellow is out, black is a possiblity but with the chrome accents (GT flames) on the side I think it would possibly clash and the caliper is already silver, so why paint it silver?

I went up to O'Reilly auto parts today to see about having a high heat paint mixed to match my Redfire (G2) color. They can match the color in a Dupont automotive gloss paint but it isn't a high heat resistant paint.

After all of that, I want to know if this Dupont paint is a possiblity or do you think that it will get too hot and blister? Just how hot does a caliper get during normal usage?

Need advice. Thanks.

Hello fellow Okie...

Have you thought about powder coating? I know there's a place here in the Tulsa area that will do powder coating on calipers. A tad more expensive than a can of spray paint ($100 est) but better quality. If you're interested, I see if I can get the name of the place.

Paint 'em black!
Excuse me, but why is there so much interest in painting the calipers? Why draw attention to something that gets dirty all of the time and means nothing? After a few miles the calipers get brake dust all over them. Then "you" have to clean them, otherwise they just look like some part that you forgot to clean, or you couldn't clean every knook and cranny. A kind of "I'll clean it next time" thing.
Don't get me wrong...it's a neat look, for a show car!
In order to keep 'em clean looking you spend a lot of time (taking off the wheels), or they just get dirty. Couldn't that time be better spent? Cruising? Having fun?
I suppose it's a "keeping up with the other guy" thing.
Someone please enlighten me. Perhaps I'll paint mine.
(not)

Chill dude, have another beer Otto, the bp looks to be rising.

I don't want to paint them black, cause the dirt will show even more.
I was actually hoping to have them painted before the car show on Saturday, but I guess I will just have to settle for the OEM silver.

Here's a link.... http://www.bapowdercoating.com/index.htmThey specialize in customer color so getting the exact match shouldn't be an issue. The bad part is, you stanger will have some down time.

Another thought is... I saw where Duplicolor has a caliper kit now. Not sure on the exact color match but it would be less $$$ and you could do it on a Saturday afternoon in your garage. Min downtime but, probably not as high quality as powdercoarting. But hey...

Good luck! Let me know what you decide and send us picks when you're done!

One more thought... I've used engine paint before on my 96 Cobra with no problems what so ever. I even did some track days out at Hallett where you know your brakes will heat up. The engine paint held up just fine. Duplicolor also carries that and you'll probably have more color choices. http://www.duplicolor.com/products/engine.html Geez... I sound like a Duplicolor spokesperson.

OUPony (and everyone else)
Sorry for the stupid posting. I'm stuck inside recouperating from very painful surgery that's kept from driving my GT for a week going on two (it hurts to sit if you want to picture the surgery).
I suppose I am jealous of all you folks with time to fiddle around with your rides. (looking for a dog to kick!) So OUPony, I chilled out and had a brew (and a pain killer or two). Much better today.
How much of a job is it to paint them? Is it a weekend thing or just an afternoon. Can you leave them "attached"? I mean, removed from the disc, but hose still attached.
I did see some shots of someone with a kind of medium blue caliper. Nice looking but subtle. Might look nice on my satin silver. Kind of how I'd envision doing mine if I could get out and play in my garage.
Thanks for putting up with me!

Otto---I feel your pain. I was out for 2 months after dislocating my knee and all I could do was sit and watch her sit in the garage. It was very depressing, especially when I just got my car a month earlier.

I am doing just a few mods, I really like the look of the painted caliper, just want it to match my car color. You don't have to remove the calipers completely to paint them, so it is a relatively cheap mod that can add looks too.

I hope you get well soon, I know it is painful to sit and wait.

2006GT---Thanks for the links, I will see what I can dig up. I am taking my car to an open car show for the first time tomorrow, so it should be a great time. I will send you some pics of the show. :thumbsup
