Default Lug nut specifications?

Has anyone put aftermarket lug nuts on their car? I bought some today but they don't fit (sure looked like they would). The ones I got were 12x1.5. What do these numbers mean and what are the CORRECT ones for our lugs?

I've done some searching online and neither Autozone or O'Reilly's have lug nuts listed for the 2005 Mustang. What gives? Do we HAVE to buy them from Ford? I wanted to put some blue anodized ones on (not rice looking trust me).

Nobody? The closest I can guess is 1/2". But I'm not sure what the thread is or what the length is?

wbr351...Thanks.

Anyone know where one could find any aftermarket nuts that fit and are anodized blue?

For the lug nuts to be blue anodized they must be aluminum.
Would you trust aluminum lug nuts?

Porsche has used aluminum lug nuts since at least 1982. I'd say they're trustworthy.

You said the key word Porsche.
In other words properly engineered and designed for the application..

I wouldn't have thought of that, thanks thump_rr. It's just a daily driver. I have the blue valve stem sleeves and caps and thought the same blue lugs would look good with the chrome wheels. Not really rice, just different. I know most may disagree and scream RICE...but they're not driving it, right?

I've had 4 Porsches (all older, tinkering projects, it'll be a cold day in hell before I can afford a new one I'm afraid) and despite the image, there's really nothing all that special about their design and engineering.

That, and there's not really very much to screw up on a lug nut. As long as the threads are sufficiently deep (should be a simple visual check) I don't see any hazard from using generic aluminul lug nuts. Aluminum is a bit more ductile and malleable than steel, but not nearly enough to have one come loose or strip off a street car if they're properly tightened.

This lug nut thing is driving me crazy as well. I want some black lug nuts but finding them is near impossible. I ended up ordering some spline drive Gorilla lugs from Discount tire direct.

Don't fret about the aluminum. They will work fine. Just don't over torque them, that is usually what does them in. Also, put them on with hand tools not a imact gun. I will tell you that finding blue annodized lugs is an easy feat, finding them to fit a 1/2 X 20 thread is near impossible.

If anyone knows where I can get some black lugs that are spline drive, preferable alan drive please let me know. I found some that fit the rear but aren't long engough to fit the front studs. And no I don't want to change the studs.

Wombat, FYI 12 X 1.5 is a metric designation...12mm by 1.5 pitch.

Thumbs up

Hey Killer,

I can't answer your question but I just saw your ride in person yesterday and it's awesome. Some coworkers and I went to Old Chicago for lunch and I spotted you in the lot. Your pics don't do the wheels justice. They are beautiful in person. I hope you can find the lugs you want because I think that would be a nice addition.

Have a good one,
Snack

Eurika (sort of). I found some lugs they are black chrome but that should do.
Anyone interested let me know I can point you in the right direction.
