Default LED bulbs work in clear front corner lenses

I had one of the chromed amber bulbs burn out of the right front corner/turn signal light after only being in there for about a month. So I tried an experiment. Bought two pairs of amber LED #3157 bulbs. One was a 20 LED pair from autolumination.com @ $18.99 each plus shipping. The other was a 24 LED pair from cnbsn on ebay for $18.45 with shipping.

I wasn't sure that they would work without an additional resistor to preserve the flash rate. LEDs offer less resistance than filament bulbs and can affect the rate of the flasher. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the flash rate was unaffected with either pair of bulbs.

My 06 is an early build and has some wiring features of the 05 (I was able to install the tail light turn signal sequences which normally would only work in the 05.

Exclamation CORRECTION!!! LEDs don't work

CORRECTION!!!! I just discovered - the turn signals, warning flashers and park lamps work fine when used alone. If the park lamps are on and a turn signal or flasher also turned on, they will not flash. I assume that without the resistance expected by the cars system, the function is canceled. So it appears that resistors (I would assume 6 ohm) are needed to make the LEDs function properly after all. That will increase the cost of changing over to LEDs.

I would like to thank you for posting this thread. I just recently purchased clear lens for the turn signals and I was wondering how they look...by the way, they look good. But the bulb issue was also a concern, again thanks.

You're welcome. And I apologize for not catching the flaw initially.

I guess I will go back to the chrome coated amber incandescent bulbs. They cost $3.49 each plus shipping from autolumination.com.

stang,

are those the "diamond" clear corners or "euro" style clear corners?

Thanks,
Jay

jason82-
I don't know what makes a corner lens "euro" or "diamond". The section for the park lamp/turn signal is transparent clear (like a clear window), while the section for the side marker is clear but has a grid pattern to it. Does that make sense?

There was a series of posts a couple months back on this site about the clear corner lights/lenses. They are hard to get. They were selling on ebay from only one seller, one set at a time for up to $170. Then there was a post that Jegs was selling them. That's were I got mine. I believe I paid $79 + shipping for the pair.

The earlier posts have got pictures of various color cars with the clear corner lights so you can get an idea of how well the combination works. I really like the black and grey colors with the clear corner lights.

ggire -
It's good to know that there is a second source. I checked and they are still listed as available on the jegs.com web site as part #034-403099CL for $79.99 plus shipping.
