Default The fuel filler problem??????

Well my 05 just started having the fuel fill up problem, fuel nozzle just clicking off every time I squeeze it. I know this has been talked to death but has this been fixed by replacing the fuel tank? I don’t want to waist my time with my car in the dealer ship for gas tank replacement and not have the problem fixed.

I have seen that thread. I haven't tried it yet, however I never drive my mustang on dirt or even when it is raining for that matter. I live in Oklahoma and if it is raining there is always a chance that it's raining HALE!!!! I don't think dirt is my problem but sense it started a 12000 miles there is a possibility.

The strangest thing happened with mine last year. I tried filling up at a Shell station and had problems. I got frustrated and left and drove to a Mobil station down the road and filled up with no problem. I then figured that the nozzle they use at the Mobil station is a little bit older and doesn't have the fancy shut-off system that the Shell station uses. But since, I've filled up at different stations and havent had any problems at all.

I used to have the fuel filler issue a lot. I got the new tank and haven't had it once since. Do it.

My replacement tank was ordered the day my car arrived at the dealership. Seems they could not put my "free" tank of gas in it. That was 12 months ago. Since that time, I have only had problems filling it up at one station, and at that at all but ONE specific pump! Very odd. The station has 8 pumping stations, and the only one I can use is pump #1. Even trying pump #2, which is part of the same station on the other side of course, will shut off every time I try to fill my tank. The other customers sometimes look at me funny while I am waiting in line behind another car at pump #1 when the other pumping stations are empty.

Take it in and get it done. My 06 had the same problem. They replaced the tank (shouldn't have, it already had the new tank)! It's just a straight forward poor engineering problem. They told me to hold the nozzle at 35 to 90 degrees (that worked fine, but I wasn't satisfied). Other than a new tank for the 05, there is no "real" fix for the 06. They re-arranged the filler neck and I have had 1 problem since???

Well I went to the dealer today about the fuel fuller problem. This is a small dealer and they hadn’t heard about it. When they pulled up the TSBs. The oldest one only applied to Mustangs built before May something 2005. My Mustang was built a few days after the build date on the TSB. The newer TSB referred to 2006 Mustangs and said to try another gas station. Anyhow they are looking into the issue for me. I am sure I will get this fixed, but I am skeptical as to whether replacing the tank can fix the problem.

I did notice that the problem only happens between full and half empty. Today before going to the dealer I tried to fill it up one more time at a different station. The tank took the fuel normally for a while then click, click, click!!!!!!!! I stopped fueling and when I started the car the fuel gage was just past half full. That’s when it dawned on me that the tank is a saddle tank. When I got home I checked the tank and low and behold the right side of the saddle tank was empty. Clearly the left side is filling up cutting off the fuel flow instead of filling the right side. I guess it is possible for air pressure to build up on the right side of the tank and prevent fuel from crossing to that side, that is were vent tube is. I believe the problem isn’t in the tank but in the vent system behind the tank.

I hate to let the dealers service department work on my car they not only scratch the nuts and bolts they touch, they also scratch the paint.

I had my gas tank replaced when I first got my car and that solved the problem temporarily. It's been about 18,000 miles since and as of recently the problem started again, no matter what station, I don't want to take it back so I just hold the nozzle upside down when filling and it fills right up with no problems.

I had problems with the first few fill ups. The nozzle would shut off before the tank was completly full. I now have 6300 miles on the GT and haven't had the problem recently. At the same time I noticed the analog fuel gauge and the digital "gallons used" display didn't match. That seemed to also correct itself.

I saw a thread recently about a clogged vent tube in the filler area. The thread posted pictures of the fix. Basically remove and clean. Apparently this worked.
