Default 2006 Mustang GT Aftermarket Gauge Installation

I'm thinking about installing aftermarket gauges in my Mustang. I'm decided that I at least want an oil pressure gauge. I don't plan on getting a supercharger, so I won't be adding a boost gauge.

I've found several good pod mounts, but I'm a little unsure about how to install the new gauge. I've tried using the search tool, but haven't had a lot of luck.

What do I need to do the project? Is it difficult?
Do I need a new sender? Are senders typically sold with gauges?
Are detail instructions available anywhere online?
How difficult is it to mount a sender and what tools do I need?

I think to install the oil pressure gauge I may have to unhook the factory sensor. Will that cause any problems?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I went with the SOS pillar pod.
http://www.speedofsoundllc.com
I would go with a gauge from autometer. Most will come with a pressure sender.
I would remove the factory pressure sender and install a tee in its place so that both the factory and aftermarket senders can both be used.

Well thats a lot of questions but thats a good thing. The gage you pick will have instructions on the install. I take it you only have the two gages between the speedo and tack. I'm guessing but I would say the pcm would need the oil pressure so you would have to put a tee in the oil passage to install both sending units. Most instructions will give you a list of tools you need for the install. Just remember to secure the wires where ever you put the gage and make sure you use a grommet in the firewall or use one thats already there. Have you picked a gage you like yet and have you decided where to mount it yet? If you don't feel comfee doing this have a mechanic do it. Good luck

Sorry for all the questions at once.

Yes, I like the looks of the Sound of Speed pod and I think I'm going to go with these Auto Meter Sport Comp II gauges.

http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...60196_-1_10339

I hadn't thought about installing a T. That would be a good way of maintaining the factory gauge, which I definitely want to do.

I was curious if someone has done the installation.

I have the SOS pillar pod but I don't have an oil pressure gauge.
If you remove the front drivers side inner fender liner you will see where the main harness enters the passenger compartment.
There is a little nipple you can cut to pass your wires through.

I went with the Autometer Cobalt gauges and their a-pilar pod. Boost, fuel pressure and the Saleen IAT gauge for my blower. like thump says these cars are easy to run you wires to the inside compartment. I didnt remove my inner fender liner just took it loose at the back side was enough for me.

Ok, I went out to the car and I'm not sure how to remove the fender liner. Does it just pop out?

Oh, and is it necessary to solder the connections or is it OK to just twist them and use electrical tape?

Alright, I found the sender and I discovered that the cover in the fender should remove easily using my right angle screw driver.

It's above my oil filter, so hopefully that means only a little oil will come out when I remove it, right?

Now, I need to figure out what kind of brass fitting I need.

Forget the tape...it'll unravel as soon as it get cold or gets oil on it.

I'd suggest heat shrink tubing and some rosin core solder. Avoid acid core solder and 'especially' avoid crimping wires where the connection is exposed to the elements.

Don't count on very good instructions. I brought Ford Racing gauges that were made by Autometer. The instructions basicly said to install the gauge and check for leaks. It didn't point to the area or talk about a tee or tell you to ground out the factory oil sending unit if you don't reconnect it. The instructions sucked. But I did use a brass tee to use both sending units.

I know how you feel. I'm having a very difficult time getting instructions for a 2005+ Mustang. I plan on doing my install exactly like you described it. I want the original sending unit to work and the aftermarket.

What brass fittings did you use? I assume all I need are a T and two elbows, I just don't know which ones to get.

Also, I need to connect the gauges to a 12V source in order to power the lights. Which 12V source did you use?

Ok. I went back under the car with a pair of calipers. It turns out that the factory sender is attached to a bolt with an outside diameter of a little more than 1/2 inch.

I've been reading online about 1/4 and 1/8 inch NPT fittings, well that's clearly not the case in these cars. I'm going to try a 1/2 inch T and then use a 1/2 to 1/8 NPT adapter if such a thing exist.

Can anyone confirm that it is, in fact, a 1/2 inch bolt and not some strange metric size I haven't account for?

Alright, I did some investigating at the outside diameter of a 1/4 NPT pipe is .540 inches, that's very close to what I got. I figure it must be a 1/4 NPT.
