well, its been 6 months since my 3 year old son "lost" (eg: broke and trashed, ate, traded to another kid for toys, converted into anti-matter) my second set of keys. little turd... anyways, i finally after basically tearing the house down a piece at a time looking for the set, i have offically wrote them off. but now im down to one set. i thought i would buy a factory key and remote off of ebay for about $20 or so. the remotes come with programming instructions. but not the keys. so, my question is, after i have the key cut, how to i program it. also, a friend of mine told me that i have to have 2 working sets of keys to be able to program another one or else i would have to go to the dealer. is that true? if so, anyone know how much the dealer will screw me over on a dang key? thanks
The dealer deals with this on a constant basis. It isn't too hard to have them make you another key, just be prepared to show you are the true owner of the car... that makes sure you're not a thief... and you should be set. They shouldn't hit you up for too much.

i just called the dealer..... $120 for the KEY alone!!!! another $40 for the remote!!!
i wonder if that key comes with a little packet of lube....... otherwise its really gonna sting when they cram it you know where....
does anyone know if i can program one of those ebay keys having only 1 original? i know the remote wont be a big deal, but what about the friggin' key? why do you need two originals? this is what im looking at getting... huge price difference here, same product...
yeah you have to have 2 working keys in order to program more, otherwise you need to go to a dealer. all of our keys were stolen a couple of years ago when our house was broken into. we had to change all our locks and ignitions on our cars. my bro had a chipped key in his explorer and we bought it to a local bodyshop that reprogrammed the keys as well. it was cheaper than the dealer as well.
i was wondering if locksmiths could do the programming.
does anyone know if the 06 f150's have the same system and use the same keys?
if so, im about to order 3 or 4 keys and have some done for the truck and the car, because $160 is ridiculous. if you always maintain at least 2 extra sets, you can make them yourself.
buy the pats key and remote on ebay....they are alot cheaper then bite the bullet having the dealer cut and program 1 key, then you program extras for future losses
I need to make another key for my 98 gt as well and im about to order 1 off of ebay that claims you can program it yourself. So for $14.00 im gona go for it. I can afford to lose $14.00 if it doesn't work.
Just did this last weekend. Dealer cuts the blank for $25 and charges $40 to program. I was lucky and had two working keys. Got the new one cut and laid all keys out in the car.
Step 1: Insert working key 1 and turn till the lights come on on the instrument cluster.
Step 2: Remove key 1 and insert working key 2 and repeat process.
Step 3:Insert nonprogrammed key and start car.
Worked the first time. Just be sure to turn both working keys far enough to make dash lights come on.
I just want an extra key to open the door just in case I lock my keys in the car. Can I just take a key that came with the car to my hardware store and have them cut me a standard key?
