I installed my Hurst Short Throw shifter yesterday....could have done it in 30 minutes if I could have found out how to lower the hoist at least I didn't have it smack the ground hard from 5 feet up ....
1) Remember to replace the steel bushing from the factory unit front mounting position. I used a vise with a large and small socket to get it started them a little silicone spray and the bushing slipped right out.
2) I had to get a pry bar to encourage the old unit out of the tranny tunnel hole and just a slight amount to get the new one back in the hole.
3) The plastic bushings from the old unit need to be transfered to the new unit...two pieces real easy to remove and installe in the Husrt unit. The Hurst directions must be followed as to which side of the shifter arm the "long" or "short" side of the arm is attached to the trans push-pull tube/bar.
4) The rubber tunnel boot was a bit problematic on the pilots side of the tunnel...take the time to get it place and check it twice because you will get dust or water in your car later if you do not get it seated.
5) The knob jamb nut was 5/8" not 9/16" like the directions indicated...
6) You will need a 7/32nd" allen wrench for the shifter arm attach bolts.
7) Use locktite on all threads.
Cosmetics: the shifter boot adapter grommet was a little less "finished" looking than i was hoping for...one side was the lesser of two evils and I'll probably never change it. The shop owner and another customer thought the white knob and chrome shaft were FANTASTIC RETRO!
Operationally: I am stunned at how sloppy the original shifter was compared to the Hurst. Phenomenal control, shifting throw distance greatly reduced, this modification is a must do. period. I have 22,xxx on the car and never realized how much I have suffered by the original unit. I'm glad Ford never installed the Hurst as the therapy of installing the unit and the drastic change in the car was well worth the $165 I paid many times over!!! unlike alcohol or drugs..I only paid for this once!!
I paid $165 from Atlantic Speed Warehouse....MONTHS AGO!!! it is the Competition Plus Short Throw Shifter....
I searched the web and found ASW had the best price, shipping and had it in stock....(So I could store it in my trunk for most of the year, kind of an investment I guess)
Thanks for the welcome!
I actually joined early 06 before I got my 05...computer issues have denied me access to my previous "handle"
What is the Pro 5.0?
I have a FBO in Wisconsin...mostly work on Beechcraft, Cessna SE taildraggers and Cirrus....I specialize in vibration analysis and dynamic propeller balancing....I travel the country in a Dodge Sprinter with my equipment when I schedule trips with clients....(Been to HI and next summer year to Europe) most clients are the type that are not satisfied with the condition the factory has presented as "acceptable" kind like Hot rodding but with airplanes instead...some items I can show with vibration analysis is cylinder to cylinder vibration levels...and we can match levels by adjusting fuel flow, spark etc...all will run smoother, some will increase speed 5 to 7 knots...depends on what issues are existing...
whats your angle?
Best!

People may rave about the Pro 5.0 shifter, the MGW shifter, etc....but to me there is nothing that beats the look of the Hurst shifter in the s197 Mustang. I used the optional black shifter knob on mine and it looks fantastic since my car has a black/gray theme in the interior and a black exterior. I probably will switch off to the classic white knob at some point just for a change :-)
Maybe the Pro 5.0, or the MGW performs a little better but who cares....lol. I love the look of the Hurst, nothing fits the Mustang better....and it performs pretty damn well

It sound like it keeps you busy and interisting. I work for the AF on KC-10's now but have worked on a lot of different fighters years ago.
The Pro 5.0 is a alum shifter but not cheep but great shifter. Not sure if they make one for the V6.

I have a chrome Hurst shifter handle and "T" handle on my Pro 5.0 shifter. The best of both worlds.

travelers, do you have any information about ordering the Hurst shifter handle and knob. I would like to do the same set up as you did with the Pro 5.0 shifter and the Hurst arm and knob.
I installed a Hurst too. I love it I agree I had to pry the stock unit out of the hole inside the car too.
It is by far worth doing! The only gripe I have with it is that when I get on it I heard a buzzing/rattle that is coming from under the dash/console. I know it's the Hurst cause it was not there before. I also know for sure I tightened ALL bolts and used lock tite as well. I'm wondering if you guys have had the same issue and what did you do about it. Ultimatly I am willing to live with it for the benefits

I had a problem with my Ford original unit rattling in 3rd and 5th gear...some in 4th...it is more pronounced now probably because the unit is tight!!!think of as a recored player needle arm...it transmits the vibration that is being generated by the tranny.....
I asked the dealer about this and they said the famous "All the v6 manuals do it"
I think ultimately there may be a bearing/syncro problem in my unit that will deteriorate as I thrash thru the gears over time....I will probably change the fluid this winter to Redline or Amsoil and see how that works next summer...
Then the fix is either O/H the existing tranny or get a replacment take-off 5 speed from a GT..if it will mate to the V6??? any one?
Let me know if your is the same sort of deal..
Best regards,
Jim
One of my clients who flies a $350,000 aircraft was allowed to use my MUSTANG while his aircraft was in the shop.
He reported the following:
Jim, I really enjoy driving my Acura TL, crisp steering, firm ride, responsive engine , just a lot of fun....your Mustang is just like that but it makes me want to drive like a 17 year old High School Delinquent!!!
I laughed and I checked the car for damage! none found except for the full tank of gas!
Having fun!

Do I understand some of you guys correctly? You pried your old shifters through the hole from inside? I did my Steeda shifter and got the old one out from underneath while the front end was on jack stands. It meandered down and forward by the passenger side of the transmission. No pry bars.
I tried several ways to get it down from the underside to no avail...I'm glad it worked for you I have no plans to put it back on the hoist though and see if I can do it that way
I think I'll enjoy it
Best!
Jim
