Default 06 mustang gt auto to manual swap

Hey guys, I have a couple of question about swapping the auto tranny to a manual tranny. How much will all of the parts cost and about how many hours of labor would it take in the shop to successfully complete?
My dad bought me the car about 6 months ago(I paid for half, just finished paying my parents off). He really didn't want me to buy a stick, because he wanted me to get the whole driving without crashing thing down first. Anyways, after six months with no tickets or accidents, I finally learned to drive a stick in my friends jeep. I am pretty much addicted to shifting now, and my dad said that if I work my ass off over the summer, he may think about paying for half of the swap, since he admits not researching the advantages of having a manual car. I will be making a fair share of money caddying at the local country club, so I just want to do some research on swapping trannies.
I understand that you all will say that it is not worth it, and that I should just buy a whole new car. That may be true, but I would still like the information on it. Thanks a lot!!

Trust me it wont be worth it.. You'll need too much work..it'll cost way too much .. i think you should just enjoy the auto, and get a stick later in life.. its what im doing.

A friend of my family owns a performance shop, and the work would be done for little to no money. My father does his tax accounting and stuff in return for labor. I'd still like to know how much it would cost.

Keep the auto its so much more convinent. Trust me you will get tired of shifting especially in heavy traffic. I dont no why automatics get such a bad rep. I have an automatic and im proud of it.

It really doesn't bother me that other people think poorly of automatics. That wouldn't be the reason why I'm doing it. I just would rather prefer to take a more active part in driving my mustang, instead of just sitting back, steering, and stepping on the gas (Idk if that made any sense), even if it will be a little inconvenient. I will definately spend some more time driving other manual cars before I make a decision.

I get were your comeing from now but I am just worried your car might see some problems after a swap like this I havent heard of too many on hear done I could be wrong though. Also if you do do this make sure you are a pro at shifting if you ride the cluth to much you will burn the clutch up and ruin the transmssion and then you are looking at big bucks.

S197 Mustang Tranny Swap - Automatic-To-Manual Transmission - 5.0 Mustang & Super Fords Magazine
I came across this when I was searching around. They make it sound like a piece of cake.
I guess manual take off transimissions go for under $700, but I'm not sure how much all of the other parts would be.

cool I say if this is what you really want and you have a good person doing the job I say go for it. This will probably void your warranty though if its not up.

Nope, just hit 41k.
And does anybody know if there is a lockout feature that prevents you from downshifting into first gear from second by accident if you are trying to powershift into 3rd, for example. I know that my friends jeep had one. That is what I am most scared about doing. Oh, and hills!! lol

If you are concerned about missing a shift to third then get a short throw.

As for swapping out the tranny; I understand why you want a manny as I won't buy an automatic and haven't for over a million miles. BUT....Yes, you can swap out the tranny. It isn't sound financial advice to do it. You are young based upon the fact that mom and dad needed to help you buy a car. Please don't take it the wrong way and young pups know everything as I did once many years ago but try and listen to the forum folks that are saying don't do it. if you want to fix your mistake, then sell the car and buy one with a manny. You will lose money in that deal as well as the car is probably worth $3k-$5k less today than you paid for it 6-9 months ago..no kidding (unless you paid $17k)

Hopefully, you have many years ahead of you and like when you buy your first house, this is just your first car, not your last. Your first house and first car won't be "perfect" as once you own something, you always find pros and cons just like you have discovered that you want to drive a car as opposed to riding around in one.

It would require a new PCM and master cylinder in addition to the clutch pedal.

Could not disagree enough with that sentiment.
I drive 40k+ per year, in the nations 5th worst traffic, and after a year in an auto and a year in the stick, I'd choose the stick any day of the week.

I think DC is now the 2nd worst traffic and, although there are days I'd like an auto, I'd never surrender the stick!

I paid 18k for the car, but selling it and buying a new one isn't really an option. I understand what you all are saying, and I thank you all for the help. I think that I am going to get a price quote from a performance shop and go from there. Thanks alot guys!!

let us know how you make out. On another note, maybe you could also be a guiding light to folks trying to sell their cars be they 05s or 06s and asking in the $20s. You say that you bought yours for $18k and that was 6 months ago and that sounds about the right price. I really feel for those that bought the cars a couple years ago and see the value in the teens and it comes as a shock to them.
