Default MAC Single Axle Back or Cat Back Drone Problems

Hey guys,

After researching all of the exhaust sounds for the 2005-2009 4.0l mustangs, I found MAC to be the best sounding in the posted YouTube videos.

I ordered just the single MAC axle back, but somehow ended up with a full cat back! Anyway, I installed just the one muffler from the cat back system, but when I started it up I was really disappointed. It doesn't really sound like I thought it would, and when driving all you hear is ear-popping drone like you are sitting inside a subwoofer, no cool exhaust note. It is just one constant sound. I mean, it is SERIOUS drone-age.

My question is if I just go ahead and put the whole dual exhaust system on, would this worsen the problem or make it sound better with less drone? I don't want to go cutting holes in my bumper if it is just going to make it twice as bad, you know?

I also posted a video of it at idle to see if it sounds like other people's MACs.

I don't think it sounds like any of the other stock + MAC videos on YouTube in my opinion, it is not throaty, just a hollow hum. The end of the muffler that attaches to the existing exhaust pipe came bent in the mail, so I was thinking maybe that sound may be an effect of a little exhaust leak?

I don't know but any help would be appreciated! Here's the link:

Welcome to the site
I have the Mac dual kit and if you cant stand drone then just stop at single and dont even think dual. It may take a while but the drone will be much much less after the mufflers are fully broken in but it will take a while. At first when i switched from single GT take off to Mac duals i was going to change them the next day but something led to another and i kept them, now i feel so lucky i stayed on with them and didnt decide too soon. Its like surfing at first it needs guts to go to but once your attached to it you wont let go.

Here is my youtube videos

After they are broken in

Wow you got a whole dual for the price of a single? good deal. You could always put the duals on and if they are too dronie just swap out the mufflers sell the macs and get something else. I had a single gt and then went to duals I had a noise at about 1500, drove me crazy was ready to take them off. turns out was when the exhaust heated up and expanded one of the hangers would touch the rear bumper, ground the hanger down no more noise. Duals look cool.

Thumbs up

Yeah getting the dual instead of the single was a rather awesome surprise.

I gave it some more time hoping it would get better, but after driving around four separate people, each one of them ended up with a bad headache after the end of the ride. I actually dreaded getting in my own car!

So, I am just going to switch over to a single GT Take-off and see if that works out better. If there is no drone (is there?) then I will probably do what you did prerunner and just go duals since i already have the pipes. Thanks for the tip about the hanger!

Where would be the best place to get the takeoffs? A dealer?

Also, if anyone wants two basically brand new MAC mufflers, let me know and they are yours for cheap! Just way too loud for me..
