FUEL FILL SLOW, OR DIFFICULT TO FILL
Publication Date: February 3, 2006
FORD:
2005-2006 Mustang ISSUE:
Some 2005-2006 Mustang vehicles may experience premature automatic shut off of the fuel fill nozzle. Several variables, including variations in fuel pump nozzles, fuel flow rates, and fuel flow pressure may result in the premature automatic shut off of the fuel fill nozzle making it more difficult to fill the fuel tank. The automatic shut off in the fuel fill nozzle may trigger multiple times after delivering several gallons of fuel or it may trigger repeatedly when attempting to establish fuel flow into the fuel tank. The latter concern may be more common when adding fuel to a vehicle where the fuel level is at or above 1/2 full. ACTION:
Refer to Service Procedure. SERVICE PROCEDURE
On 2005 Mustangs vehicles built before 4/26/2005 that experience premature automatic shut-off of the fuel fill nozzle more than occasionally may benefit from replacing the fuel tank with a revised design tank per TSB 05-15-12. The revised design fuel tank may reduce the occurrence of premature automatic shut off. On 2005 Mustang vehicles built on or after 4/26/2005 and 2006 model year vehicles were built with the revised design fuel tank. As a result, replacing the fuel tank on these vehicles will not change the occurrence of automatic fuel fill shut off. Occurrences of premature shut-off may be resolved or improved by using a different filling station fuel pump. Unauthorized modifications and/or alterations to the vehicle are not reimbursable under warranty and are not recommended for this issue.
SO ESSENTIALLY FORD IS BLAMING THE FUEL NOZZLES/PUMPS/STATIONS AND WILL NOT FIX THE PROBLEM EVEN THOUGH IT IS KNOWN AND UNDER WARRANTY. ANYONE KNOW OF ANY WORKAROUNDS?
I had the tanks replaced and it still does it occasionally on both cars. If it starts acting up I insert the nozzle rotated 180 degrees. After the flow is established I hook the handle open and slowly rotate it back to the normal position and let it run. That seems to work 99% of the time

their response is crap... ive supposedly had it fixed under the tsb and still have the same problem at certain gas stations. so i am left to look like a fool filling up for 10 minutes, twisting and turning the filler... what a joke... dont they test their designs in preproduction??

next time you look under the left quarter, note the tiny filler...then squeeze it- the actual tube is like a half inch smaller yet(corrugated tubing is just a cover).
yeah- problem must be the pumps. theres a thread over at blueoval where I bitched about this, and same filler still present 300,000 cars later...a ford truck assembly guy replied they have to use a chiller on the pumps at the line to fill the new trucks with 2-3 gallons of gas the factory puts in...(also reduced tubing diameter this year on trucks), and some trucks have to be pushed off the line and filled with a gas can to get that first couple gallons to go in. rediculous.
weird thing is, mine burped gas all over the car the first 2 fillups, but now it seems fine. some others have said same thing. Its not the pump causing mine as Ive returned to clicky/burpy problem pumps just to try again, and now its fine. I have noticed force of habit though, I always pull the nozzle back out about an inch before filling.

Mine's the same way. Did it early on, then decided to behave since.
Turning the fuel nozzle upside down while filling will allow unrestricted fill up. I have been doing this since February of 2005. It started with just certain gas stations, but as new nozzles were installed, the problem got worse. I happened across solution this completely by accident one day in total frustration....
After looking at the way the fuel flows into the vehicle, it is a combination of the fuel input design and assisted pressure fill ups. The development of the vehicle probably never had a powered pump fill up. I would imagine it was done with a gravity filler. Which probably flows just right into the stock fuel tank of the newer Mustangs.
i usually have to hold the pump handle sideways and it runs in good. i dont find it to be that big a deal really, but i agree, fords ( over paid engineers) should have put a little more thought into it. and they drive the cars around long before they are for sale to the public so you know they had trouble since day 1 its the old " keep it quite and see who complains" trick

i have found that the pumps actually do matter. slow pumps...the ones that take 5min to fill up...dont pump fast enough to keep the nozzle from shutting off. i had a slow pump at speedway....got 10$ in before it shut off.(i was empty) i paid and went straight to shell across the road. their pump pumped way faster and it filled it all the way up with no problem at all. so as for me and my test...it is due to slow pumps. at least sometimes

mine did that a few times when trying to fill it when i had more than a half tank

My crappy dealer actually changed my gas tank. The problem still happens every once in a while. Go in and argue. It helps if you actually have gotten work(spent money there) done there. If you have not been in there for even an oil change they are gonna be more resistant. The recession is hurting them and they make their money on service.
