Remember those cars you wouldn't be caught dead in when you were young? Most of them have turned cool with age and rarity. I was reminded of this when I pulled in to work this morning and there was a Maverick parked in the lot. It's red with chrome wheels and it's looking pretty cool. This weekend at the show there was a restored '59 Rambler four door and a "67 Ambassador station wagon - try to get parts for those babies. There was also an AMX - not a dork car but rare and too cool. What cars do you remember?

Back in my college days. I had a '82 Escort that had nothing on it at all (i.e. not a single option). It was beige with beige interior, standard transmission, no AC, no power steering, windows or door locks. Every time that you made a left hand turn the engine would stall.
The only thing that worked well was the stereo. Which was an aftermarket mod.
However, . . . It did haul two kegs of beer at a time - So I guess it wasn't all that bad.

My first car? I wanted to be dead... a 1973 Station Wagon Pinto. Custom piss green oxidized & faded paint with matching interior. It had a ground pounding 2.0 liter that burn more oil than gas. It was a 4 speed! 0-60 times were somewhere around the 1 hour mark.
I bought it off my uncle for $1. Unfortunately, it hasn't appreciated nearly as much as some other cars. If I still had it today, I'd be worth $1.08..

-1993 Lightning Black. Not anywhere near stock. Daily Driver, Dive Truck, etc
My wife drove a Pacer, AKA Speed Bubble. AMC had some real winners. The AMX wasn't too bad. I had a '65 Rambler Classic, not exactly a dorky car, but not a rod by any means.

OK, so I've added a few things to it. Check my Profile - too many to list here.
My fist car was a .68 Camaro form hell. I blew the ngine...at the time we thought there could be a dozen different things that went wrong, boy were we surprised to find all dozen went wrong...a thrown rod, a broekn cam (broke in two), four fried spark plugs, one bent lifter and two bent push rods, a fired oil pump, and a crakced block. That is what I can remember. In addition to the poor engine, the interior was shot, door panels, window cranks, and door andles were missing, seat covered in cheap and well used seat covers. The body looked like a high school shop kid got hold of it. And this was my dream car when I was 16.It is amazing what kids dream of. Too bad noone tells us that dreams cost. The car lasted about 3 months before it was deemed a total loss.
My next car was a '77 MGB...for which I still have and modified the hell out of by dropping a 340 HP Ford 302 with Tremec 5 speed tranny and a Ford 9" posi-rear end. Weighing at a mere 2200 lbs, I am pretty much banned from race tracks.
Today I saw a '70 Chevelle wagon and thought it was cool looking, but when I was a kid, no way.

I had a '73 Pinto wagon I actually bought new - and traded my "67 ragtop Mustang for.
I proceeded to pull the engine and have it built 30 over with a radical cam and a Holley 650 four barrel. After I blew the Pinto rear twice I put a 9 inch Mustang II V8 rear in it. It dynoed at 220 HP at the wheels. I had the rear windows paneled out - before Ford thought of it - flared the fenders, dropped the suspension and ran C50 13 tires on the front and M50 14s on 10 inch deep wheels in the rear. It was a Porsche killer on the freeway

Never had a dork car, except for the 81 Mustang I had with the 255ci V8.
But I've always had a soft spot for the 79+ AMC AMX/Spirits/SX4s.

My first was a hand me down '97 Ranger. Wasn't bad for a first auto though. Manual, 4 cylinder (if you floored it, it'd get up to 30mph, maybe), a/c, standard across the board, even a radio w/ no cd and no tape deck .
I had a 53 Ford Vic. Two tone, green roof and cream colored body. It was powered by an 80hp flat head V8. Three speed on the column. Green interior that matched the roof. Payed $125 for it. Replaced the clutch once. Rolled the front end up on ramps and crawled under. It was the beginning of March so I got pretty muddy and greasy too. I walked in to the house like that and my Mother almost killed me. Ah those were the days. lol

Really that should get me the trophy right there but...
Top it off with a 1973 Green Pontiac Safari Station Wagon. It was so big that the hidden 3rd seat folded forward as opposed to the wierd little death trap seats that would face the rear glass in other wagons. You remember the ones that if you pulled up behind them at a stop light the children in back looked like they were in a little glass cage with these "help us" looks on their faces?
So whenever people get on me for having 3 Stangs it's not like I haven't paid my dues. I was 29 before I ever had a car that I really wanted. I acquired the 66 when I got married in 96, we bought the 96 GT Vert in 99 and the 06 came in March of this year.
Sorry for the rant... (hook pulls Snackmaster off stage).

I feel ya there my friend, I learned to drive on a '81 Citation and I wrecked my mother's '83 Chevette two weeks after getting my license.
