Hi all. I have a 2006 GT and I’m new to the forum. I was wondering what you guys are doing for affordable winter tires and rims. Most of the tire stores I’ve been at have been trying to up-sell me, and I wonder what some lower cost options may be, especially for the rims. Are the ’06 and ’05 GT rims compatible? Will 17x8” rims clear the brakes on a car currently with the 18” rims? Yes, I’m clueless . Thanks in advance!

I drive on my stockers all winter...they aren't that bad in the snow...I mean the Pirelli's are after all M&S = Mud and Snow. They aren't by any means mud bogging tires like for a truck...but they will get you by. If you plan on driving in a foot of snow, nothing will help you.

I wish I could get a junker for winter, but I already tied up so much $$$ to get the 'stang. Maybe I'll just cover the car in bubble wrap all winter... Seriously, the roads are usually decent around here, but there's 3 or 4 times a year we really get dumped on. I saw some 17" take-offs from a '05 GT on eBay, so I might get those for the wheels. Anyone know if wheels from before '05 can be used on the current generation Mustangs? Thanks again.
If your '06 Stang has stock 18" wheels (or factory wheels) then they are interchangeable with '05 wheels and 17" wheels will clear your brakes. If your brakes are upgraded (say like Baer or Wilwood) for 18" wheels, then you may have a clearance issue. '06 Mustangs comes with either 17" wheels or 18" wheels, and in both cases, they use the same brakes, so you should be good.
As for other year Stangs, the offset is different so I think the wheels will be further in (more overhang of the fenders).
I got a set of the 17" bullitts from ebay. And tossed some Goodyear Eagle Ultra Grip D3's. Excellent tires, would even say the best for snow, but thats a biast opinion from a Goodyear store manager.
Just about any strictly snow tire will be better than an all season tire when it comes to cold weather and snow.
I tried to make it through a winter in Maine with the stock Pirelli Nero Zero M+S. i had never use snow tires, but thought how much better can they be than All Season rubber. I was sorely mistaken. I had massive problems on the stock tires until I got four Michelin X-Ice from Tire Rack. They made a night and day difference. I had no issues driving through 4-6 inches of unplowed snow, on dirt roads, and even on ice. If you are going to drive your Pony in serious winter conditions, I can't recommend snow tires enough.

I have the same concern as you, I live in New England and my mustang is my daily driver. I have to drive 100 miles every day to and from work, mostly highway. I have been looking up tiretrack and they recommend the following -
17x7.5 in rims and Dunlop SP M3 winter tires, $1168 for the whole package which I think includes installation and balancing.
I was thinking I'll go with the BLizzak ws-50 instead but the package info on tiretrack's website does not allow this option.
Does anybody know a cheaper and better option but again I do not want to compromise on road grip in snowy conditions
I have the same issues. I'm currently living in Tampa but plan on moving back to Mass within the next couple months. I've been looking to trade the Stang in for something more practical in the snow but I'm so upside down(about 9 grand) that I'm scared I'll just be stuck with this car. I love my car, but I'm just so scared I'll kill myself in it driving it in the snow. Will weighing down the car help? I heard if you keep lots of extra weight in the trunk during the winter it helps out a lot. I'm scared I'll end up having to stay in Tampa just because of the car I drive.....
Go to the Saleen website.New take offs for about $300.00 plus $150.00 for shipping new tires and stock 17" bullitts.Poco
That's a totally smokin' deal and a great suggestion... unfortunately, they haven't been offering it for a while and currently are not taking any new orders on take-offs... at least according to what I was told a couple of weeks ago when I inquired about a set.

+1 on the buying a junker. As you can see, I live in RI and the best move I made was buying the 97 Ford Ranger. I got it with only 49k on it and for only $3000. It costs pennies to insure, it's INCREDIBLE on gas (at least compared to the Mustang), great on snow (got a pair of BFG ATs on it), and if it gets a little banged up, who cares!
Buying the right beater is ultimately a worthwhile INVESTMENT. I keep my Mustang registered and insured for the nice, dry days on the weekends.
Don't forget that you won't be putting hard mileage on the Mustang (driving in crappy weather)!
