I am shopping around right now for insurance and in NJ, the cheapest insurance rates i can find is no less the $5,000 a year. But some places are over $8,000 and that is after i lowered all my stuff, and had high deductibles.
That's terible! I live in Hunderton county. I pay about 1400. Dunno what kinda coverage or your driving record is like...but I'm moving the the PA border soon, my insurance quote dropped 200 bucks...giddyup.

$5000-$8000 per year? That is a rate reserved for teenagers with bad records and new WRX's
but I have some good news...

Mine is $1010 year (Mustang amount, more if you count my other cars), 38 yrs old, clean record, multi-car discount, and hell-of-nice-guy disocunt (ok, in my dreams on that discount).
You should take a look at the August issue of Consumer Reports. The did an investigation on how auto insurance companies decide rates, and how many companies are starting to use your credit score to help determine how much you pay. For example, they show a chart that points out that a hypothetical 28-year old male in Orlando Florida who drives a new Toyota Camry can have an annual premium anywhere from $782 to $4,755 from different companies by taking into account his credit score! It is claimed by the insurance companies that a person who has a lower credit score will eventually make more claims, since the lower score indicates to the insurance company that the driver has less extra cash to pay for minor incidents. It's a very interesting read.

Interesting, yes, but legal, I am not so sure. I would bet that the insurance companies end up getting sued big time for such bad faith practices. Now the lawsuit against them would be really interesting.
According to the article, most states allow this use of scoring, but some states have passed laws to restrict this kind of scoring. Insurers do not have to disclose their scoring systems. Insurance lobbyists have successfully repelled efforts and laws to ban or restrict this type of scoring in may states. When something like this comes out though, insurers begin to have second thoughts on using it. Either way, it's good to be an informed consumer, as this can affect what we pay, legal or not(for now).
