Default 2006 Mustang GT Resurrection

Okay everyone, I’m within a week away from making some forward progress. I believe my car is repairable and will not be totaled. In the event it can be fixed I have several pieces of homework to do and need some help.

If I am going to have my car fixed I intend to use the funds to choose the parts I want and possible pay anything additional while the labor is being done. Here are the few things that will need to be changed for certain:
  • Engine (the block cracked in a complete circle where it meets up with the transmission).
  • Transmission (the output shaft is bent and the case is cracked in many many pieces)
  • Flywheel (some of the teeth have been ground away against the teeth from the starter)
  • Exhaust pipes in the center of the car (the mufflers should be fine)
  • Driveshaft will most likely be replaced (the aftermarket one blew apart)
  • Starter (this cracked off as well)
  • The rear end may be fine, I just had 4.10 gears installed.
Okay, so my car rebuild project… What recommendations are out there from those with experience? My goal is going to be to turbocharge the car, and depending on costs maybe go with a twinscrew s/c. Since I am replacing the two largest components in the car I’d like to build them up to be able to handle up to 600hp (assuming this is not asking too much from the position I’m in).

Engine: I know that there are tons of companies that do this kind of stuff, so maybe some recommendations would be good. But what are my options in terms of engines? Are there other options that will still be smog legal so that I don’t have to go with a replacement stock motor? Can I get a more powerful and stronger engine in it for under $7500 (the estimated cost of a replacement engine)?

I plan to go with a turbo or s/c in the near future so I was told I should, at a minimum get forged pistons during this process. I like the idea of the remote mounted turbo. Any other suggestions? Which companies are the best in terms of providing me with this information? (I’ve seen the ads in the magazines and will be calling a few of them as well).

Transmission: I was told that I could swap in a stronger 5-speed transmission that is comparable in price to a stock unit. So this is certainly one thing I’d like to upgrade while I’m at it.

Flywheel/Clutch: I’m thinking of going with a Fidanza aluminum flywheel and most likely a clutch while I’m at it to handle higher horsepower amounts.

Exhaust Pipes: since they’re replacing them I figured I’d go with a Bassani X-pipe for example.

Driveshaft: Although I do have the stock unit I wonder if the cost of a new one will be included since the one on the car destroyed itself. If it is replaced I have a hard time considering another 1-piece. I’ve read lately of the problems with a batch of them from a recent group buy. I’m thinking using the stock one would be safest….. does anyone feel confident that a one-piece (i.e. aluminum one) could safely be used w/o any vibrations? I dunno…. I’m scared on this one….

Rearend: I have 3.73 gears sitting in my garage since I decided against them and instead installed the 4.10 gear. If I am going to turbo or s/c should I have the 3.73s put in at this point?

Anyways, this is my starting point and now that I am closer to getting to the repair process I want to begin the necessary research and be prepared as best possible. Thanks for all of the previous support (http://www.allfordmustangs.com/forum...ket-steel.html) it has been a crazy ride these last several months!

Glad you're making progress... You could go with a Teskid short block and 4340 forge everything. You could do that for under $7500. Why not consider a 6-speed GT 500 transmission? As for the driveshaft, I have 100% confidence in the Powerhouse unit. I've had mine for a year with 0 problems. Gears are a personal choice. Many still run 4.10s FI but 3.73s seem to be the gear of choice with a s/c.

Cool info, I'll look into that engine info. I spoke to this one shop that specializes in transmissions and was told that rather than going with a 6-speed, go with the TKO 600 5-speed which is used at the track and much stronger than the 6-speed and the stock trans...

That'll work... The TKO 600 is basically an upgraded Tremec 3550. Good solid tranny.

Is it possible to get a 5.4L shortblock installed and still be street legal such as this one? It does show that it's the engine used in the Shebly GT500. I would ideally like to be able to put in an engine that is both stronger and has more n/a HP.

This was also a good thread on engines, working out my own answers here...

For my 2 cents I'd have Larry Hays build you the engine, he can get you a teksid block with all forged internals. This is what I am doing. The TKO 600 is a good transmission, however, a T56 can be had that would take HP and TQ upwards of 800. You could also go with a TR 6060 trans (the GT 500 trans) which is suppose to be an upgrade to the T56. I personally have the Bassani catted X-pipe. If you want to go with a 1 piece drive shaft that I haven't hear people have problems with you may want to check into the Spyder drive shaft.

I have seen some posts regarding wiring issues if I chose to go with an engine other than the 4.6, and some posts mentioning that it would be less expensive to simply build up the 4.6 engine and supercharge it rather than the more expensive turbocharging options. Thoughts on this?

You can build the 3v to take 20 lbs of boost which should put you easily into the 550-600 rwhp range.

For my 2 cents, I would stay with a 4.6 and build it and and S/C or Turbo charge it.

I'm glad you're starting work to repair your ride. I was starting to wonder where you went. So what ended up happening between all the lawyers? I mean, if you're allowed to talk about it.

Yeah, I'm close, hopefully my car will be repaired and not totaled. But so far, after getting the investigations done, I was prepared to file a lawsuit, and with a few days before the cutoff date given to him he finally opened a claim with his insurance.

They sent out a failure analysis engineer, he has since returned his report to them and the insurance rep just finally got his report back. So this week hopefully I'm get some info that we're moving forward...

I saw this post on CA. But stay away from SHM they use to build really good motors but I have been told that they are not as good for what they price. Thats what I was going to put in mine after mine blew.

Modular Mustang Racing offers 04 Terminator Blocks fully built and stroked to 5.0 for a good price. That bolt right up to our heads and trannys. I love my motor great power.

And if your boosting 20psi i dont think normal pump gas is going to cut it. Cause I have mine boosted to 9.5 and I pull 545 RWHP.

MMR also holds the records for the fastest modular mustangs in the world so they do the job right on the builds.

3600 on the block and if you buy alot of stuff from they im sure they will give you a great deal they cut the price of my block down to 3300$

Just a bit, the insurance co rep is coming over today to check out the car (better than a phone call telling me it's totaled!) so I'm moving forward one inch at a time!
