2005+ Mustang GT... Are aftermarket cams worth it ?
Ok... endless posts have been made saying cams are good for 35 - 40 hp, some others saying they are good for only 10 hp and loss in torque. But why ? persons who do a cam swap and not having all the necesary bolt-ons for intake/exhaust to make them work properly? Bad tune? both ?
Wich ones would be the best ? Comp? Crane ? BBR ? other? This is so confusing ...

ppl have been goin compcams but i ehar a few issues with them, though they are said to hit up 35-40hp. IMO I plan to wait until the bugs are fixed in them and then get them.

Makes me feel like a kid every time.
I'm in the same boat as MexGT. I want a set, but I'm not sure which are really good for a daily driver. I get mixed reviews on the power gains. Mark estimated that he got 35-40hp, but wasn't sure since he had another mod done at the same time. That's still a lot of power from one mod. And in the grand scheme of things, it may be cheaper than a set of headers with almost twice the power output.
Aside from the power, I'm also concerned about the sound. I like that idle, but I don't want the car shaking all to hell while I'm at a red light.
I think Stage 3 is out of the question, but what do you guys think? Mark's car is a bit of an anomaly due to the number of mods he has. Stage I, II. or III for my daily driver?
The problem is that if you run variable valve timing (and do not disable it) you cant run any really aggressive cam profiles.
Al Papito at Boss330 is now doing a VVT kit that disables the VVT and allows him to run bigger more aggressive cams.
Those of us that have experience with cams in the push rod engines have seen cam changes result in big power gains across the band and at peak RPM.
The fact that there are 800+ horsepower cars on the stock cams with the VVT running clearly shows that unless you are really forcing a lot of volume down the throat of these engines, you don't need to change the cams to make big power.
Then when you compare the cost of cams and installation and other supporting mods to adding a turbo it seems like throwing money away for little gain. People slap a turbo on a stock motor and make excess of 500 RWHP and 550 TWTQ and the motors will hold together at these levels.
Nobody is getting 35-40 horepower from cams on these cars and most are losing torque. I have seen dyno for cams only and they had like 16 HP gain and lost torque. If you cant install them they will cost you about 1800 dollars and sorry that is not impressive power for the money.

Not true... I gained 28 just from stage 1 cams on a stock motor with nothing more than headers and a larger TB. With stage 3 cams, pnp heads and forged internals, I gained 61 rwhp.

I've heard of no problems with the CompCams. They're the most proven for the 3v motor. Crane and Crower now also make a cam for the 3v.
I have a hard time believing that cams are priced at $1800 and have them actually sell. I've seen the new 3V cams at $700 for both and they make power. And my opinion... I wouldn't use Crane parts to prop open a barn door. But that's me.

Think I paid ~$1200 for the first set installed (didn't upgrade the valve springs/retainers that time). Not sure this time since I paid to pull the motor and do the heads at the same time... I guess I could buy $1500 for p&l.

Cams, valve springs and retainers (steel) are about $1k. Figure $500-$600 for installation.
