A rattle could be loose exhaust components or a bad u-joint (if you have a rear wheel drive).

The bad U-Joint might be the issue and I hope so. I'll certainly take a look at that this week

It could be just me, but I didn't catch a description of the noise...

Can you describe what the noise sounds like, or even post a sound clip?

Also a little background could possibly be helpful. Has anything changed recently? i.e. New tires, exhaust work, suspension work, etc...

Was it a sudden onset noise with no corresponding events?

Nothing changed recently. I just lubricated the suspension and replaced the front brake pads like a couple weeks ago, but the noise was already there. It's like a grinding sound and it literally happens when I brake. Wife and I went for lunch today and she wasn't too happy about it.

Okay, so that sounds more like you should be looking harder at the brakes than anything else. My original brake pads had a wear indicator tab that scrubs against the rotor when they need to be replaced. They sounded exactly as you are describing, so put them under really close scrutiny before ruling them out.

Yeah, I certainly going to do that this coming weekend. You know, it bothers us when something is wrong with the stang and we want to fix it asap. Thanks for the advice!

I have a rattle/knock kind of thing that sounds like its a muffler or something swinging side to side by going over the slightest of bumps. Have had it since I've owned it (1.5 years) and can't find it. The exhaust seems solid so then I suspected maybe a window rattle or hardware and pulled the doors all apart but everything in there was as tight as ever. don't wan't to hijack the thread but the title seemed generic and fitting

yep, grinding or scraping sound when braking suggests pad(s) worn out and need to be replaced

Check your rear suspension bushings, and shocks.

I can assure you that I recently changed the rear brake pads then had suspension, bushings and shocks checked and everything is in good condition.

Scotmo, I think we may be in the same boat. Exhaust, suspension and everything else seems solid, but still can't figure out where the noise comes from. I think Travis98146 might be right. Maybe, we need to check the U-Joint

This is the noise I hear, the faint knocking, at least on the recorder. It seems to be more from lateral motion as opposed to vertical bumps. I can almost get it to do it at a stop just wiggling in the seat. While parked I leaned into the rear quarter and pushed to hear it. I'll have to get it up on ramps or something get under it and have some one do that.

That sounded like an exhaust pipe clunking to me.

I thought something like that originally too but everything around that is tight.
