I installed one of these gismos in my 2014 GT 5.0 last Thursday and ripped it out an hour later....literally.....I tore into pieces getting it out!!:surprised:shocked:
It actually drove and felt much better with respect shifting and the car felt more rigid.....BUT......the NOISE WAS RIDICULOUS for a street car!!:surprise: Every gear in the mt82 sang OUT LOUD as if it was being blared through the radio speakers and the ONLY time the noise was acceptable was under very light throttle on a flat road.....that's it!!:|
It sounded like all the gears in the transmission were straight cut RACING GEARS and I'm sure there would be an advantage for a "Race Only Car" but not for my street toy!!
I thought about using just the side pieces but it was so noisy I just threw it out.......it shifts fine with the just MGW shifter without the bushing....cheap test that for me....failed!!
I used one for a couple years but took it out a couple years ago. The noise didn't bother me but I'm not sure the mount made much difference for me.
I installed polyurethane engine mounts several years ago and I don't think the addition of the transmission bushing on top of that made much difference.
Reading reviews on AM cutting 1/4" off the center portion's length and drilling some small holes in the center kill the vibration. Anyone here have opinions on that. and which is better between Whiteline and Steeda?
I shortened the center lobe and cut a hole in it and it made it loads quieter. However in my experience, the insert does take some time to settle. When I put it back in after the mod it made just as much noise as before, but after a few days the noise went away. Maybe the soft material adjusted? In any case I'd recommend giving the bushing some time- you may also find the noise goes away.
I cut a hole in mine and also shortened it, which helped out some with the noise/vibration. Nevertheless, I eventually took it out because the vibration made the car feel cheap. I solved the whole shifting issue by making the decision to pony up the cash for an MGW Race Spec Shifter.....all shifting problems went bye-bye!
The point of that stiff transmission bushing is to limit the relative movement of the transmission vs. the shifter, which is mounted to the body. If you use an MGW Race Spec shifter that mounts rigidly to the transmission or any shifter with the blowfish bracket, that problem is eliminated as the shifter is completely disengage from the car's body and will always remain aligned to the transmission. It's essentially like a top loaded shifter. This makes the stiffer transmission bushing completely unnecessary.
I did mine a couple years ago along with a stainless clutch line and MGW shifter (race spec wasn't a thing yet unfortunately).
I did not modify the bushing, I installed it as-is with no cutting or drilling. I personally only noticed a slight increase in trans noise, definitely not enough to bother me. I can't say how much difference it made since I installed it with the MGW, but overall the package vastly improved my shift quality.
If I did it again today I'd just get the MGW race spec and skip the bushing, there is zero reason to use it with the race spec.
