iPhone and sync in 2011 Mustangs

Hey everyone,

I would imagine that someone out there has both an iPhone, an '11 Mustang (with Nav hopefully!) and can report as to the success / inability to use features.

I have the Mustang, but I am deciding whether to get an iPhone for the fiancé and I or not. I know on my current phone, the Bluetooth works fine, but some of the cellphone features do not, for example the reading of text messages on either and the phonebook download does not work on hers. Also, perhaps other phones too, do any of the current generation Smartphones not work with sync?

Any experiences would be appreciated!

I've tried using bluetooth audio and audio through the USB port. Both worked as expected.

I've received a call while it was SYNC'd and that worked. Haven't tried anything else.

I have an iPhone my wife has a Blackberry. I have downloaded the phone books from both and both work just fine for making and receiving calls. I don't do the text stuff so can't comment on that part. I do know one thing, if the radio or music is turned up high and a call comes in it will make you jump out of your skin. My phone is the primary, if the car sees both phones my wife's will not work.

BTW, I have not figured out how to get voice mail if the phone is in the car, it's like the car won't let me do it.

My iPhone as worked great as a phone while connected to my Mustang. Only thing that doesn't work is the reading of text messages, but that's not supported.

My problem lies in the fact that my Mustang won't index my iPhone. No matter what I do, I get the lady telling me that my device can't be indexed. I don't know what to do.

My iPod nano works fine, but my iPhone just won't work. Plays through bluetooth just fine, but not while connected through USB.

I had read there was a sync update that was suppose to fix that. You might want to try googling it.

Are there any phones out there that actually do read the texts back?

The syncmyride.com site has info about best phones for sync, what features different phones can use.

There's not many. It's an issue with phones not fully supporting the bluetooth 2.0 stack. I read somewhere that Blackberry's was working with ford so that their next generation of phone fully support it.

My iPhone works OK. I have the same problem, when I use the cord it can't index it. I'll check on the Sync update. It all seems to work OK with Bluetooth audio, but you have to do everything from the phone, which is OK. Makes and receives calls very well.

Overall, I love my iPhone, REALLY love my mustang, and Sync?...seems very overrated.

OK, an update. Directly from the syncmyride.com website:

If your device has been updated to Apple firmware version 3.1 (or greater), then you will experience an INDEXING concern which may limit functionality of the device with SYNC, including longer indexing times (e.g., 30 minutes). Note: Earlier versions of the iPhone firmware are not affected. The Ford SYNC Team is aware and has been in communication with the Apple team regarding the concern. We will post an updated response once more information is known. We appreciate your patience and would like to offer the following recommendations for continued usage of SYNC and your device:
-Use the AutoPlay feature. SYNC will still playback content on the device that is on the "Now Playing" list of the device. Media control will be limited to the Play, Pause, Next and Previous Track.
-If the device supports Bluetooth Audio, connect to the device with SYNC BT Audio/Media Stream. Media control will be limited to Play, Pause, but can also be controlled directly on the device.
-Use the Line In input to connect to the device headphone audio jack. The media will need to be controlled on the device directly.
-Transfer unprotected contents to a USB flash drive. SYNC supports playback with full media control of iTunes formatted unprotected media.
-Allow some additional time for the device to index.

If you have any additional questions, you may also contact our SYNC Support team via chat, e-mail, or phone. Thanks.

Translation: Sync doesn't play well with iPhone. Any iPhone other than the very first silver model is either on firmware 3.x or 4.x, and even the originals are almost always on 3.x. So they work, but with pretty limited functionality.

On the other hand, any other phone won't do much period. I'd just go with the iPhone. They'll eventually upgrade Sync.

My problem is that when a call comes in on the iphone the ring is TERRIBLY loud when I have the music set to normal. Is there a gain setting somewhere? I have to turn the volume on the radio WAY up to hear the person and then turn it back down for music... either way though... when it rings in it is terribly loud and shocking.

any ideas how to fix that?

I've always noticed that when I get a phone call in my car the phone is at a completely different volume. I'll make sure this is true tomorrow when I go back to work.
