Default Why is the Mustang made in a "Rear Wheel" drive only?

I was calling about insurance rates on a 2011 Mustang V6 and the women on the phone said the Mustang is beautiful, but it is only a rear wheel drive car. She then went on saying how a co-worker had to leave work early to get her car (rear wheel drive)off the street before the snow came or she would be stuck. I really do not know the answer is what I told her, but with that being said, is there any chance that Ford would ever make a "Front wheel" drive Mustang?

I have no knowledge about cars, so I do not mean to step on any purists toes with the Mustang, I am asking out of curiosity.

Thanks

Ford thought about making a front-wheel-drive Mustang... once

It was the mid 80s, they were going to put it on a Mazda-built platform and make it front-wheel drive with a 2.0L 4 cylinder and a 3.0L V6.

The outcry from Ford, Mustang, and musclecar enthusiasts was so great that they decided to continue the fox-body Mustang and renamed the Mazda-platformed car "Probe".

I myself will NOT drive front-wheel drive. I hate the way 99% of them handle on dry pavement, and the way 100% of them handle on wet. If Ford ceased to offer a RWD car tomorrow, my next would be a Hyundai Genesis coupe. (It's RWD)

It would break my heart if the Mustang was front wheel drive. I'm to the belief that the Mustang should never see snow, ice, or rain. This is why living in Phoenix is nice. I can drive my monster year round.

Most genuine sport or performance oriented cars are RWD or AWD. Better handling on dry pavement and no 'torque steer' effect that can occur with FWD.

I live in Texas and drive it all year round. I don't think front wheel drive will ever work in a mustang because all its weight it near the front and so is all the power so you can't really expect the front wheels to handle all that weight and all that power, and then also expect them to turn the car. Maybe an AWD version, but I don't think that'll ever happen either.

You can't drift a FWD car like you can with a RWD car! Plus, who wants to be pulled from the front? Might as well buy a horse and a buggy... because that's what it will be like. The mustang will NEVER be a FWD sports car... Ford has too many mustang fans to do something stupid like that...

And just imagine all of the ricers converting to mustangs... hell no!!!!!

Yep, as stated, the "Probe" was the FWD Mustang replacement when Ford considered canning the RWD platform.

I agree that I really don't like FWD cars, they are not confidence inspiring, and you can't put the power down to the road. If you want a performance car, it must be RWD or AWD.

The only missing on the Mustang is an optional IRS (Independent Rear Suspension).

sports/rwd cars also allow you to steer with the throttle modulation in racing which is something fwd won't let you do.

basically fwd is better for fuel economy and cost savings and
arguably better in snow.

Really? REALLY? I admit rear wheel drive cars are not as good in the snow as FWD, but I drove a Mustang all year round, rain, snow, and shine in Buffalo and Syracuse, NY, two of the snowiest cities in the country, and survived. Go slow, take your time, and carry some kitty litter in the trunk (for weight over the drive wheels, and to help if you do happen to get stuck) and you are good to go!

In the current design it would not be possible. Ford could never get a transaxle to work. Have you looked under the hood of a GT? Not much room left.

Now that we are done with the tech part, why on earth would anyone want a 400+ HP V8 with front wheel drive?? :kooky:
By definition a Pony car is front engine - rear wheel drive. The Camero and Challerger guys would laugh us off the road.
