Default Dealership Sirius Antenna Install Question...

So I got Sirius installed after I bought the vehicle. This meaning, it came from the factory "Sirius" capable...just needed the Sirius receiver and antenna. The antenna that they put on is some magnetic thing that sits on the back of the roof, above the back windshield. I was just curious if there was any other option for an antenna. I feel like this one doesnt get great reception, as it cuts off quite regularly. My 09 had the factory antenna on the trunk lid and i never had a signal loss of signal (except for when going under bridges or tunnels). I also think it just looks stupid having the little black thing on the roof of the car...the car is too pretty for that crap. Anyways, any help would be appreciated. I love Sirius and would like to keep it...but im starting to get so frustrated with a good fix that im debating just scraping it altogether...

Can I use other antennas with the receiver instead of the one it came with or is it made only for that exact antenna? Oh, and are there like upgraded antennas for better reception that Ford sells?

Thanks all!

Guess you could get the trunk wart antenna and put it on the car. Requires a hole in the decklid.

Strange that the supplied antenna has problems, same type that is used with most aftermarket satellite installations.

By the way, what is the part number for the add-on sirius setup from Ford?

And what did it cost?

no clue what the part number is...and i think it is usually like 400-500. i haggled it into part of the deal when i bought the car. Its the part that works with the factory stereo system. The antenna just looks like ass...but if im getting spotty reception when its on the roof...i doubt it will work well on the rear deck or anything inside the car...and i definitely dont wanna drill any holes! lol

Which model did you get? Just curious as I thought they all came with the (am I allowed to say?) turd on the deck lid now.

I'd be thrilled to death if mine didn't come with that but I guess with the Sync it'll have to so some of the features like turn-by-turn directions would work?

If you love your dog, get a microchip, they really work! My lost dog was back home in just under 24 hours thanks to the good citizens who called the county and the microchip that told animal control exactly where he lived.

Not sure...ill try and see if i can find out. It was installed at the dealership when my car arrived from the factory. The parts they added were a sat module and the antenna. They actually orginally put the antenna on the front of the roof, above the windshield...but that looked pretty stupid, so I moved it to the rear of the roof this morning.

anyways, anyone know of this addition and if i can use other antennas? thanks

It's obviously a base car, that is why it had to be added on.

And I didn't mean that you should move the antenna you have to the trunk and drill a hole, I meant that maybe the stock trunk wart antenna may work better because nobody has any reception problem with them.

Of course if it were mine and there was a problem with the reception I would take it back to the dealer and get them to fix it, thats what warranties are for.

Maybe you messed something up when you moved it.

You should be able to use most any satellite radio antenna made to work on a car.

Yes, I'd be really interested as I'm totally confused now.

My '09 has the permanent bump that I think actually looks alot like your magnetic one except I can't move it.

When I ordered the '11 (which is now going to be '12 since the first car came in wrong) I was really excited because I thought the cars I looked at on the lot didn't have that bump... I figured the new antenna had maybe incorporated the satellite and the am/fm. Later I decided I was just on crack the day I ordered the car and was seeing things but now after hearing from you I'm thinking maybe I did really see some cars without satellite bumps. Hmmmmmmmmm.

Ltngdrvr, it is a base model...I knew that already, considering I bought it. The questions I had weren't related to the Sirius having to be installed, it was about 1) alternative options for the antenna, and 2) if i could use other antennas.

And I was having reception issues since it was installed...not since I moved it. thanks for the input though.

My 09 had the bump on the trunk like everyone elses, and never had a reception issue. The antenna that was added is smaller than that bump was. The base models that are Sirius capable and not Sirius ready don't have the bump, which is why they installed this magnetic one. And this thing feels like the magnet isn't even all that powerful. I'm now trying to figure out if maybe they were supposed to install the trunk bump and somebody just screwed up...

412Horses, here ere are a couple photos of the receiver and the antenna. I couldn't find a model number, the only thing on the receiver was the Sirius SAT ID#. They mounted the receiver under the dash on the passenger side, basically on the inside of the right fender.

I'd be interested if you ever changed antennas. I just had the same kit installed on my 2011. They put the small magnetic mount at the center of the roof, back edge. Likely where you placed yours. I have found reception great on the open highway, with some loss of signal on twisty mountain roads with lots of trees crowding the roadside. Overall satisfied, but wonder how you made out.
Tnx - J

I mounted the Sirius Antenna on my F-150 under the plastic cowl right in front of the windshield on the right side (to stay away from the wipers), and my Mazda 3 was mounted under the dash where the navigation screen would have been all the way in front. Both had the same reception when hidden as they did when they were on the roof.
As long as the antenna is not covered by metal it will still receive signal. I think I read or was told somewhere it needed to see 30 Degrees for best reception

He's right. I mounted a satellite antenna under the rear deck between the speakers and it works perfectly. If you are getting bad reception I would bet it's a loose connection somewhere.

My 09 had the trunk wart, it was a premium 4.0 but my 2012 is a base model and I want Sirus so I guess I'll check into this further. Thanks for the thread info.
