First Oil Change

Hey everyone. I gave my Sixxer her first oil change today. I've read a bunch of questions by people who were uncertain about changing the oil or who had questions about the filter and such, or people who are just new to cars in general and have no idea how to do it, so I took some pictures.

Here's the set up:

Note: You only see 5 liters of oil in the pic, I had a spare liter of 5W-20 not shown that I had to put in.

First things first: drain the oil.

To do this, locate the oil drain plug on the oil sump. Its located facing the passenger side of the car. I did not take a 'before' pic of me unscrewing the screw, but this should help you nonetheless:

I had used an adjustable ratchet to remove the screw. Was not difficult, but required a little force to break the screw loose.

Next thing on the list is to change the oil filter (if you choose to). Which I did. To get to it from the bottom, you have to remove 3 bolts which are really easy and the bottom of the car even tells you where (and has arrows pointing to their locations.) Once unscrewed, the panel just swings down and you have easy access to the filter.

I chose to remove the filter from the top:

Then I drained the oil, by routing it with a cardboard piece, so as to avoid getting dirty oil on wires that just happen to be in the way:

That's it. Real easy.

I have not gone under a 5.0, but I imagine its similar - if not, the same. Anyone with a 5.0 care to chime in?

did you jack up the car to get at the drain bolt and panel bolts? I can't imagine you didn't.

Looks like he's using race ramps, or a very very similar product.

Uhm, well that would depend upon your definition of "about"! The 5.0 drain plug is on the REAR of the pan, and the filter is angled 45 deg., and further up. The 5.0 takes 8 qts.

I don't think anyone familiar with changing their own oil will have an issue. I posted looking for pages in the on-line service manual, and got the usual useless ref. to owners manual pages. as a response.

FYI: On the 5.0 what I was looking for was TQ spec. for the drain plug - I did find it - it's 19 ft-lb. or 26 N-m.

To the OP: Did your factory filter look like the one in my "First Oil Change - Mystery Filter" thread? Was it larger than the 57502?

2011 GT Kona Blue with 401A Black+Cashmire - HID, Security, Brembo, 3.55, Comfort, Rear Camera, and Glass Roof.
Mods: Steeda Sport Springs and HD mount (2011+ style), Koni "Yellows", UMI roto-joint adj. PHB - oh, and one big scratch in a BBP wheel!

Yes it was larger, and it was manufactured by FoMoCo (Ford Motor Company?)

I was a bit surprised when I found out the WIX was smaller, but WIX are nothing less than outstanding filters, or so I hear... YMMV

Yes - see my thread on it in GT. It appears the factory stock filter is MUCH different than the FL-500S (what the dealer will use if you get them to change your oil).
