2012 Universal Garage Door Opener

Does anyone know how these work? My existing opener is from the mid-Cretaceous period so I'm just curious whether it will be compatible or not.

And what keeps these from opening other garage doors?

If you love your dog, get a microchip, they really work! My lost dog was back home in just under 24 hours thanks to the good citizens who called the county and the microchip that told animal control exactly where he lived.

Scott,

My wife's 2004 CTS Caddilac has one. I programed it when we got it. It is locked into the frequency of that specific door unit. Her's doesn't open anyone but our garage door.

No Homelink will NOT work with your opener BUT there is a good chance, you could upgrade it. Basically think a new receiver that operates your opener like your wall switch does. Which is a good idea anyway since your older opener certainly does NOT have changing codes and could be easily opened by a device that just tries all codes.

And the reason someone else's Homelink can't open any (modern) opener is that it still has to be "married" to the opener.

Bit of a paranoid question, but are there any safe guards to prevent someone breaking into the car and gaining entry to your garage? Does the car have to be on for example? I will always park in my garage so not really worried, just curious.

Thanks all.

And Hoosier I didn't realize this was Homelink so now I have a really good breadcrumb to follow to read up on it. The Ford site was pretty vague on this, at least in the Mustang section. It just lists universal remote without anything clickable, at least that I could find.

I've sort of been thinking about a new door and opener anyway, wonder why I suddenly am more concerned it's super secure and want to keep the dust out, LOL.

And hey CDB, welcome to the Waiting-for-a-'12 Club!

We just bought a Subaru Forester with this last fall and the vehicle has to be running in order for the garage door opener to work unlike the unit door opener that's clipped to the sunvisor. I would assume that it's the same for the 2012 Mustang.

Hey guys,

I looked into this a little further for you… On the new 2012 Mustang we no longer use Homelink, we now use the Car2U Home Automation System. You can access the programming info in the 2012 Mustang owner guide at www.FordOwner.com under the Driver Controls section. Also, it does work with the vehicle off, but thanks to the anti-theft system, if the car is broken into, it will be disabled! Hope this helps.

New garage door openers have a button on the actual opener that you push at the same time you program your remote. That will lock into the specific code needed just for your opener and not your neighbors.

i've been curious about this. I have an older garage door opener, not sure what model. Will I be able to use this feature on my 2012 without buying a new garage door opener?

Yes. Your opener may have an upgrade kit but even if not, you can disable the opener's receiver and add a new 3rd party receiver that you wire up like the manual switch in your garage. But you might be better off just paying a little more for a new opener when on sale.

Hi Deysha..

What happen if my Mustang (you have my VIN) should come with Car2U according to FordEtis home page but actually there is no Car2U on my sun visor???

If your garage opener remote has dip switches the car2U system can program it. However, it's not like the Homelink system that memorizes frequencies by holding your garage remote button down then pressing a homnelink button to memorize. The car2U system assumes a frequency and then has the user program in the opener's dip switch settings. It's like using an abacus instead of a calculator! It's the most ridiculous system I've ever dealt with, but it works. If there's a good part it is that you only have to set it up one time then it's good until it loses power.

Even that would be a downside here, we lose power pretty damn often... generally just for a minute or two but at least once every ten days or so. Getting that new garage door opener seems less exciting now.
