Base radio vs. Shaker 500

Just wondering if anyone can paint a picture of the sound quality of the base model 2012 radio vs the Shaker 500 that comes with the Premium package? Right now it seems impossible to find a 100 or 300A package on dealer lots to compare with. I'm no audiophile but I do like a decent sound quality but not big on other "bells and whistles" so to speak, so this is an important consideration for me!

I had the base radio, it wasn't too good. But if you do a search you'll find that the Shaker 500 systems have issues. The base system is easy to modify, and for less $ than the Shaker system. I kept the base head unit & added an amp, new speakers, and a subwoofer and mine sounds great.

I listened to the shaker 500 in a 2011 at the dealer. My 2007 ford fusion basic stereo (6 speakers - no amp) sounded clearer. I would even go as far to say that the shaker 500 - 1000 is utter garbage. Save your money, take your car to any local audio shop when you get it, and swap out the door speakers with some high efficiency infinity reference series speakers (they don't cost much). If your still not happy, swap out the back ones. Want more bass? Add an amp. Want even more? Add a sub. Don't spend your money on the shaker garbage. You can't put lipstick on a pig.

Mind you I have an ear for music. I am a muscician and have a dedicated listening room replete with tube gear and very expensive speakers.

The biggest flaw of Ford's stock and Shaker systems are that the speakers are crap.

I've got new speakers waiting to go in for mine as soon as it arrives.

I'm curious, what did you get? I was planning to do the same but hadn't selected speakers yet.

I bought Hertz Energy 5x7s (ECX-570) for the back and Hertz component speakers 5.25"+tweeter (ESK-130) for the front.

You can look at them here:
HERTZ by Elettromedia - Special Car Stereo
http://www.hertzaudiovideo.com/Doc/pdf_ecx570.pdf
http://www.hertzaudiovideo.com/Doc/pdf_esk130.pdf

They're not cheap speakers ($450 for both pairs on sale) but I don't plan on upgrading the power output of the system** so having a high sensitivity will help.

I've heard other people having luck with Pioneer TS-D6802Es

** Depending on how I feel later, I might build a sub box in the spare tire well, so if I put an amp in for that I might boost the power to the rears as well.

I've seen some success with Alpines. I love Alpine speakers so I was just going to default to that more than likely.

What's your plan for mounting the tweeters up front?

Metra adapter plates. I'm not planning to drill anything in the doors, I have plates that allow you to mount the 5.25" and the tweeter in the stock 5x7 hole

The only reason I didn't want to get a component set was because I didn't think there were adapter plates available - I searched like a madman for them. Do you have a part number for the plates?

Thanks in advance!

Thats exactly how I did mine see this thread:

http://www.allfordmustangs.com/forum...ustang-gt.html

There is some trimming of the factory brackets to get the plates to work but its not too hard.

Btw the components didnt sound too great or get loud with the factory HU. I ended up adding an amp to power them.

Well, I can't say for sure I'm not due to get the car until May. But I suppose it will depend on the efficiency of the speakers themselves. I've also got foam baffles and dynamat for the doors too.

Awesome, thanks guys!

Definitely putting a component system in to start, then. Didn't want to consider putting holes in the door panels.

The Shaker sounds much better than the Blose that I had in my Vette. However, I also have a new Tahoe where the Bose was greatly upgraded and I would say they both sound equivalently good.
