Adaptive Learning and Tuning - How often do you re-apply your tune?

Numerous anecdotes about the car becoming sluggish after conservative driving regardless of whether it was tuned or not. How often do you have to re-apply your tune (bama, steeda, etc..) to get her back to life? I've read comments about lifting the battery cable for an hour to restore the tune. Personally, I'm a little apprehensive about applying tunes on a monthly basis out of fear of a malfunction (they've happened).

Take the poll. How often do you apply your tune?

Yeah I read that thread a while ago. Various opinions by those who've tried it.

You should never have to hook up the SCT to re-apply a tune, doing so would invite more opportunities for major failures with the vehicle computers. When you say pulling the negative battery or the fuse mentioned in the posted link, that is merely resetting the keep alive memory and does not affect the tune at all.

Never reapplied. I'm all for tunes but the less I need to fiddle with my computer, the better.

OP, Grimace427 has it down. You shouldn't ever have to reapply the same tune. Whipping the KAM memory will only reset your cruising fuel trims to what the tuner originally programed, but shouldn't have any affect on wide open throttle.

Hope this helps!

I read the massive bama thread a couple times over the last few years and I think this topic is a bit of an enigma to some of us with average tech skills. In another forum, I believe a bama tech attempts to briefly explain how he deals with the adaptive system in technical detail but maybe there's a need to explain it in detail in laymen's terms. Given the fact that some guys here have admitted to reapplying tunes in order to deal with adaptive learning, and some who have posted here advise not to do it, shows that there's still some confusion. The bama thread is packed full of stories of how tune A is more righteous than tune B, but few owners want to talk about adaptive learning as if its a drunk uncle.

So if I correctly understand the posters in this thread, pulling the battery will have the same affect as doing the fuse thing, at least temporarily. Glad I won't need to reapply the tune regularly.

After all the horror stories I've read about people bricking their ECU with some of the SCT tuners, I wouldn't want to flash more than I have to. It sounds like inviting disaster.

Me, and every other 2011+ Mustang owner I know does the fuse #47 thing, and the results are excellent for everyone. One guy on the 2011+V6 forum even hard wired in a relay to his fuse 47.

Since the erratic behavior in your advanced trac started popping up, have you still been doing that?

Fortunately Steeda.ca is a 15 minute drive from me and I'll be sure to do it at their shop, just in case. Not sure I'd have the nerve to do it otherwise, since this is my sole source of DD transportation.

Appreciate that some tuner owners are taking the time to sound off...thanks

I don't mess with any of my stuff and I'm pretty happy with the results I have with the original install. Just to fix something that ain't broke ... I may pull #47 just to see what happens!!

Maybe it was just me, but I felt the more I changed the tune and played around with the tuner, the higher of a chance I felt I was going to screw something up.

However, my tuner was stolen from me so even if wanted to reapply it, I couldnt and I'm stuck on Bama 93R. Not gonna complain though, it could be on something like 87S or even stock. Maybe for Christmas I'll get another.

Dude, don't mess with your tune UNLESS you are switching to a NEW tune.

Otherwise, it has been proven that pulling fuse #47 for a few minutes (the amount of time required is questionable, though 10 minutes is guaranteed a good amount) will reset the adaptive learning "thingy" in our car's brain.

No need to brick your car with pointless re-flashes.
