Have a 2012 but thinking this can be any year problem. Has anyone started seeing tiny speckles or maybe even cracks inside the headlight plexiglass covers? Definitely on the inside of the plastic. I'll post a picture later, but this just started showing up. My warranty is recently expired since the build was april 2011, but going to see if dealer will plead my case with ford. Keep car in garage at home but at work I'm at an outside parking lot. Not really extreme weather conditions. Not happy with this!
I went with headlight film, suspecting over time the fronts of the headlight housing would not wear all that well. I also spray them with a detailer that has UV protection on a weekly basis, to prevent the oxidation that is often seen on 5+ year old cars.
I wouldn't expect the dealer to do anything since the car is through warranty. They're expensive enough to replace that i would just live with it. Good luck.
I drive about 75-80% hwy at 75-80 mph. At 57k miles my headlights still look new. The headlight film I picked up at AM is very effective at preventing the pitting seen above. I highly recommend it to those whose lights are still un-pitted.
I also have a clear bra on my bumper to minimize chips in the paint.
Same problem on my 2011 GT. Appears to be on the inside. Bought a plastic lens polish kit (Mothers) did not help' then after using that I determined most is on inside, taking to dealer next week to see if defective. Out of warranty.
Dang! that stinks. I believe the cover is part of the whole unit is it not? I would try the dealer. If you are just recently out of warranty. They may do something. I know the headlights for my b`13 GT are something like $950.00 a side.
Yes, mine look exactly like Tomtriatik... Have to call dealer this week. will let you know. It's a shame, I like the stock look. Don't want an aftermarket look or want to pay outrageous dealer costs either. If I have to, I'll live with it.
Just back from ford dealer. Like I expected, since technically I am past the 36month warranty, by 3 months, the service manager suggested that I contact ford directly. Seems that since I didn't buy the car new (or from them), he did not want to take the extra few minutes and do anything himself. Just sent an email to ford customer relations... I'll be surprised if hear from someone and greatly impressed if they actually do something like giving me a warranty consideration!
Just back from dealer. They said they had not seen anything like that yet. So they are going to contact Ford and see if they will cover them. I am at 30,380 miles but three months past warranty.
I will post Ford's response when I get it.
I'm still waiting for my phome call from local dealer after this mornings visit.
I did sen a pm to Deysha earlier today.
I will probably get same response, however if more owners have this issue then Ford needs to go after their supplier of these headlight lenses.
I will post my Ford decision as soon as I hear back. Thanks....
Try contacting the Ford rep here on the forums, Deysha. She is pretty amazing & has done a lot for the members of AFM as well as other Mustang forums. She may or may not be able to help, but it could not hurt. Send her a PM outlining the problem.
They're just too expensive for Ford to step up. If they did, they would have been better off with glass housings. Take a peruse on ebay, somebody might be selling a set of stockers for a reasonable price, but still probably $400-500.

Haven't heard a response from my email to ford cust service. Tom, I'm really curious what the dealer says to you. My car, like I said is a 2012 but the build was april 2011, so I'm in exactly the same boat. Plus the service manager said exactly the same thing, " I never saw anything like this"! Boy, I wonder if we can get some more people with this problem... Yes I see ebay OEM units for $250 apiece or Spyder headlights that look OEM for $300 for the pair, but I don't want to spend the money if ford will admit it's a defect.
Agree, if defective we shouldn't have to pay ... It's not just the $300 or more for a pair...there is also 2 hour install, as you have to pull front end apart. Will post Ford's response. I am also checking with others on some Facebook groups and our 70 members in N.E.W. Stangs local club.
Here is ford's response: My name is Jamie, I am from Ford`s Customer Relationship Center (CRC). I have reviewed your email regarding the headlight concerns on your 2012 Ford Mustang. I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.
I have checked to see if there are any warranties or programs that would provide coverage for your current concern. Unfortunately, there is no coverage at this time. I suggest that you keep your repair receipts in case Ford initiates a recall or program in the future that will provide coverage.
Thank you for contacting Ford Motor Company ........... Just as I would have expected... I have to admit that I have bought several Hondas and Toyotas, and had a couple of similar requests to consider a repair when the warranty had expired. Once was almost 6 months after expiration, when CV joints had gone bad. Both Honda and Toyota had someone call me personally to discuss the problem. They felt that the few hundred dollars spent on a few customer complaints were possibly worth multiple future sales from both me and people I might tell of my positive experience. Guess what, they were right...

Sent you a PM Deysha, with my name phone Vin#, forgot mileage, which is 34,600 miles. Thank you for the offer to help. Not expecting anything, but it would be a generous gesture by ford when someone is just 3 months out of warrangty (and yet within the mileage limits)... It says a company actually cares a little extra. That what makes repeat customers.

That's what I expect. Whike my car is 39 months old, I don't use it December through March due to winter and don't drive it on rainy days, unless I am on a long trip, such as the 50th at Charlotte. Since there is no other damage to the paint or front of car, this was not from stones or sand...and it appears to be inside lens, so it is defective plastic. I've had other cars for 10 years, 140,000 miles, similar headlight lens without this problem.
Got my call from dealer today. Ford Service Rep was in, reviewed with service manager and agreed to cover 50% of the cost. So headlights with installation will cost me $310. I am going ahead with that. Considering I am out of warranty, I am fine with this deal.
For anyone still watching. Just got a call from a cust serv rep at ford, ultimately my claim is rejected. I was 3 months out of warranty, still within mileage though. Very dissapointed with Ford. Oh well...
Yeah I'm bummed too, and a little P.O.'d... I'm worried it will get worse as time goes by. Also, not really looking to pay half the cost either. We'll see what Deysha can do. She seems like she's looking out for us. Thanks Deysha.
