I got my Barton short throw shifter installed today. It took about 35 minutes and was pretty easy.
The shifter is AWESOME! This thing looks like it was designed for a space shuttle. I hated covering it up with the shift boot. It's not the cheapest shifter on the market but after seeing the build quality I can see why.
The throws are short and precise. It totally changes the whole driving experience. I would HIGHLY recommend this shifter!
I was wondering about the 2nd to 3rd shift also. I find that I sometimes miss that shift. I noticed that on the Steeda video of their shifter that the driver does an open-handed slam from 2nd to 3rd. Do the short throws make the shifter more precise and harder to miss shifts?

Yes it is a lot harder to miss a shift when using a good short throw. The reason being is that there is less distance between gears which makes for less error. A shifter is always my first mod, and this shifter is probably the best I have ever used.
Proper shifting technique will also help with shifting. You NEVER want to grip the knob on top and steer the shifter. The 2-3 shift should be performed with the palm of your hand behind the shifter pushing it in one movement towards your radio controls.
Thanks Tim5.0 I've been trying to read up on the Barton. it looks like a more solid piece with more parts than the Steeda. my main concern, is it worth the extra 125-150 bucks? a lot of folks swear by the Steeda Tri-ax. I'm just trying to figure out if I can justify the extra $$ Is the Barton that much better than the Steeda? Is Barton new to the mustang mod business? how is their reputation for quality and performance/durability over the long run? I'd appreciate any input on this. any racers please feel free to throw in your opinions also.
OR, is this gonna be like the tunes; they are all pretty similar. just a matter of personal preference

I also believe the barton offers 40% throw reduction, and steeda's is only 20%. Thats another big diff.

I will try to answer this the best I can.
I have not used the Steeda so I can not compare the 2, But there are a few things I know with out using one. Price wise, the Steeda does Not come with an adapter and shift knob. So if you look at shifter vs shifter the Barton is only $80-$90 more.
The Barton has 40% throw reduction and the Steeda has 20%. So basically the difference between the Barton and the Steeda is the same difference between the Steeda and the stock shifter.
I have about 30,000 miles on my Barton shifter on my Camaro and it feels like it did the day I bought it. Originally I had the Hurst on my Camaro but replaced it with the Barton and wow what a difference. So Yeah there is a difference between shifters.
If you read posts on the Camaro5 forum there are some pretty awesome stories on Bartons customer service. The one that sold me and convinced me to make the switch was of a guy over in the middle east and he ordered a shifter from them while he was over there. He was only going to be home for a short time, so he ordered it hoping it would be there in time so he could install it before he left. Well come to find out Barton Next day aired the shifter at no cost and refunded his money for the shifter, as a thank you for his service, and there are a ton more stories on camaro5.
They make parts for all kinds of stuff, Helicopters, commercial airlines, so I wouldn't worry about quality, their stuff is top notch.
I appreciate your help. they sound like a great company. as soon as I can, I plan on getting one.
one last question. which vendors/dealers carry them and which one has the best pricing?
