For inquiring minds...I just finished drilling my weep holes in my "S"s and sank the bit in all the way and pulled out long strand, loose fill fiberglass. The exact same stuff you sprinkle on resin when doing body work.
Which is fine with me because the more water goes into muffler, the more the packing is going to lay down and the deeper they will sound. A quick quick way to "age" them...

This isn't anything new really. Borla themselves fully state that they use filament to tune the mufflers. Kinda the point of a muffler: use packing.

Seriously, it is just for info geeks like me who like to know exactly what they use ie. Magnaflow uses stainless steel wool.

Yeah, Roush's axle back doesn't use the packing thing. So I better give them a call, OH NOES1!

Other than the Fiberglass, did water drain out?? Any difference in sound after the drilling?? I plan on doing the weep hole drill soon.

No water but I've only had them on for 2 days now. There will be soon when I fill them with it...
FYI - The loose strand fiberglass appears to be wrapped in a cloth material, like a pillow as it came out on the drill bit that way.
I'm also a bit unconverntional and don't follow directions. I drill my weep hole on the bottom of the case, forward so that all the water can get blown out not like the instructions say to put it on the end cap where it will be about an 1/8" high. Really it was more of the fact that the freakin sway bar is in the way even when jacked up and my big cordless drill wouldn't fit.

This isn't a new trick, nor is it even one exhaust guys came up with; Audio guys have been doing this for years.

It's well known that the wave propagation speed of sound is lowered by fill materials in an enclosed space; it has an identical effect to increasing the volume of the space - it lowers the resonant frequency of the enclosure. As far as exhausts are concerned, this means that the sound emanating from the muffler will seem deeper and more resonant.

As the fiberglass becomes more damp and more solid, it will provide more of an obstruction to wave propagation and increase the deepening effect of the muffler even more.

It's nothing new.

It's common knowledge that Borla, like most others, makes, basically, glasspacks. That's an ancient muffler technology and is simple and cheap to manufacture. An acquiantance used to work for them and laughs that their $1000 Lambo mufflers cost about $49 to build. Magnaflow, BTW, uses steel wool with fiberglass around it, so just a slight variation. Heck, I thought everybody knew that. *shrug*

BTW, weep hole = good idea. With the mufflers all the way at the back of the car, water is more likely to build up, as they take much longer to heat up. Generally, you want the hole near the rear-most wall of the muffler, because the exhaust forces the water that way, anyway, and no more than 1/8" diameter. It's a good thing, too, to get the car out at least once a week for a one hour-plus drive to heat verything up. For those with long commutes, you should be fine.

Yeah remember the "revolution" that was flowmaster back in the day? No glass, just chambered steel.

You'll want the weep hole at the lowest point in the muffler as water finds it's own level. Generally, that'll be at the roll by the front wall of the muffler, from what I've seen of installs on these cars.

Thats why I like Flowmasters' chamber design. Sound won't change and if the packing finally blows like the Borlas,(and my FM hushpower/outlaw series) eventually MIGHT, they might be too loud. Shelby 'musta owed Borla a favor to put Borla stuff on the Shelby from the factory. Proud '12 LS w/Flowmasters.

I am surprised that Borla does not use stainless steel wool. All the magnaflows I have bought have had stainless steel wool packing as it lasts longer than fiberglass.

I think there's a sound profile involved there too though. Fiberglass definitely absorbs energy more than steel. Steel deflects because it's so durable. My thought would be that fiberglass will give a bolder, richer, and smoother sound when used in muffler applications vs a stainless steel wool which I would think would be a harsher and more punchier sound if comparing apples to apples muffler design and packing amount.
