Default Do you push the clutch pedal all the way to the floow when shifting?

I know, kind of a basic question. Its been 15 years since my last manual transmission, and I'm still trying to determine the best seating position for clutch and gas pedals. In my case, the clutch pedal has to be all the way to the floor to start the engine. Clutch engagement happens a couple inches off the floor. If I adjust the seat so that I can comfortably push the clutch to the floor each time I shift, I'm quite far forward and uncomfortably close to the gas pedal. Adjusting the seat back farther so that my right leg is comfortable with the gas pedal, its a stretch to push the clutch to the floor each time. At this point, I'm thinking its necessary to only push the clutch pedal slightly past the engagement point, and not to the floor. Also, is the clutch engagement point adjustable? Having the engagement point up forther towards the drivers seat would be much more comfortable for me.

Clutch Engagement is standard, you can't adjust it.

When i shift i do not push the clutch to the floor that often just enough to ingrage it and it slips right in or if your really good you can power shift with no clutch however i can not do that I have seen it done tho no idea if it is bad for your car or not some say it is some say it isnt

I, too, find that my seat is too far forward...it's a leverage issue concerning the clutch.

I depress fully. Some people don't, depressing just enough to disengage the gears.

You probably don't need to. Personal preference

I do/did clutchless shifting all time w/ my '03 Accord. I'm not sure what impact that has on clutch, etc., but at least there's no grinding...

I make sure to floor the clutch downshifting from 6trh to 5th because the transmission grinds if I do not. Otherwise I depress the clutch just enough to free the gearshift. Quite often while drifting to a stop I shift into neutral without using the clutch.

The stock gearshift is not smooth enough to power-shift in my opinion.

FYI powershifting still uses the clutch, but you stay at wide open throttle during the shift.

Back to the op my girlfriend likes driving the car, but she is quite a bit shorter than me and takes a few more minutes to get comfortable. However she does not have any issues pushing the clutch to the floor and she has learned to drive a manual pretty quickly.

You guys are thinking of floating gears, not power-shifting. And it can be pretty bad if you dont do it correctly. I did it all the time in my explorer because my clutch slave cylinder leaked so i ran out of hydraulic fluid pretty quick and lost function of the clutch anyway.

I always fully depress, but I can time the shift so that the "dead zone" coincides with "between gears" in one fluid motion.

I always adjust my seat so that I can almost put my foot on the floor behind the brake pedal. Then I tilt the seat back until my arms are slightly bent.

I've found that this is the easiest way for clutch operation in all trafic conditions, it's almost effort free.

correct me if I'm wrong, but can't shifting without using the clutch damage/excessively wear out the synchro's? I am pretty sure it's at least risky if you don't get the engine RPM's right.

Correct. Unless you are perfect at rev matching (and you won't know you are on a synchronized trans) you WILL be putting more load on the synchros as they have to work harder to speed up or slow down the gears to mesh. It really should only be done on vehicles designed for this like big trucks and extremely old vehicles. These vehicles also have gears designed to deal with minor grinding on a normal basis, as it is inevitably going to happen at times. Big trucks also have a clutch brake that is engaged when the pedal is floored. Engaging it during shifts will quickly burn it out. This would be the only real reason to not fully depress the pedal, and it obviously only applies to vehicles other than ours.

Same. Its my first manual transmission (and first new car) and I'm scared to death of screwing it up. Fully depressing the pedal and the notchiness of shifting into second does hurt my acceleration time a lot.
