OK, so now that I've had my car for a couple of weeks I have found skip shift to be totally annoying. I like to take off slowly in first and then around 2500RPM shift to 2nd and get on it. Well guess what gets in my way!!! I also like the option of shifting from 1st to 3rd to 5th. Not possible if you are shifting to 3rd at around 2500 - 3000 RPM.
So....time to disable skip shift. It wasn't all that difficult. The shift 1st to 4th message still appears but I'm not forced into 4th any more. For those of you interested in how to disable it...here are the instructions.
The skip shift solenoid is located on the right side of the transmission, close to the back and on top. It is difficult to see it but you will see a black connector leading into a round black housing. Reach your hand up between the transmission and the tunnel and disconnect the cable. There is a small latch on the cable connector that you need to depress. It pulls off very easily once the latch is depressed so if you have to pull hard, you have not released the latch.
It is probably a good idea to cover both the cable connector and the solenoid connector. I used a piece of 3/4" diameter shrink tubing. On the cable connector, I simply slipped it over the connector, folded the shrink tubing back over the cable and tie wrapped it to another nearby cable. On the solenoid, I used the same shrink tubing about 3 inches long and tied one end closed with a tie wrap. I then slipped the open end over the solenoid connector and used my heat gun to shrink it around the connector.
The entire process took less than 15 minutes after I got the car on jack stands.
I have included a diagram of the area of the transmission (courtesy of the Ford service manual) and marked up the connector and solenoid to help you locate it.

This info was posted probably 6 months ago when a Ford tech confirmed that unplugging the solenoid would have no ill affect on the operation of the car.
not to sound clueless, but i am...whats skip shift?
If, while driving a manual, you're below a certain RPM (not sure of the number) the car will force you to shift from 1st directly to 4th rather than a normal 1, 2, 3, 4. Can be quite annoying for those who don't like to get on the throttle after every stop.

It actually appears to be between 2500 and 3000 RPM and you also have to get there leisurely. If you get to that RPM too quickly, skip shift doesn't engage. I found it somewhat dangerous once (only once) as I needed to accelerate quickly and could not because it forced me into 4th.

what would be the point of this tho...does it help with fuel consumption
I guess I am lost. Last night was the first time I drove the Mustang. I bought it for my wife. I didn't notice a skip shift deal on it. I went 1-2-3-4-5-6 every time. Does every Mustand MT/AT have it on it? I am getting a Bama tune today. Does it remove this from the puter. What makes this option engage? RPMs ? Like I said I am finding more and more things about this car every day.

I am not sure what the conditions are that cause it. I think I have seen mine flash once or twice but disappear before I actually shift. Never been a problem for me.
It is there for fuel economy and tuned to the parameters of the EPA mileage tests as I understand it. It is there to get the car into a higher gear and better MPG during that standardized test.
It doesn't absolutely force you into 4th. If you are determined to get into 2nd, all you have to do is slide the shifter across the neutral position and then into 2nd.
