So a buddy of mine is picking up a 2009 Chevrolet Corvette 3LT Z51 this weekend as an xmas gift for his wife. I'll be taking him to the stealership this sat to pick it up and then he is going to stash it in my garage until xmas.
Based on my research, I'm thinking this to be a drivers race and was curious as to what others might think. I'm sure a few safe but spirited runs will happen on the drive back.
2012 5.0 with the mods in my sig against his 2009 Chevrolet Corvette 3LT Z51 auto.
I was not in any hurry to get my boss intake installed but now I'm wishing I had already installed it, dammit.
If a good driver is behind the wheel, the power is going to be put right down to the ground where it needs to be. It's a nice car to drive (I almost bought a 2008 Z51). 55 MPH disappears in 1st gear alone and with the torque band, gearing, and the lightweight of the car, you're going to be dead stick by her third gear. Sure it may have a cheap interior blah blah blah blah blah...there is no denying that it's a FAST car.

Have u taken yours to the track before? If so what was your time? After checking your mods I think u would beat him as long as u didn't botch the launch.
I know three people with them, autos and manuals. None have gone better then 12.4...
I think this is pretty accurate. The trouble is (despite my previous statement) is that the car seems to get odd in second gear. It's like our second gear. EXTREMELY short and it just feels like it should be geared taller in second to take advantage of the LS3 power band. But whatever. I'm not an engineer so I'll just go back into my amateur mods corner.

You've got 50hp on him and he's got 500 less lbs and more rubber on you.
I had an 08 stock vette and it felt much faster than my 12 stock gt, and it was much easier to launch...damn skinny wheels and wheel hop in the ford just sucks.
But you've got an extra bunch of hp, not sure if it'll be enough.
Rolling start you might get him.
From a dead stop, I'd put money on the vette if he's a good driver.
All that said, I still like my mustang better - it's more fun, more progressive in a drift, has the sync and a lot less expensive.
not familiar with the Z51 but with my mods listed, the closest so far street run ive had was with a 10 or 11 Vette Gran Sport. When we let off at around 130-135 i had him by a lil over 3/4 of a car length...not sure if it was car or driver that beat him but honestly, i was suprised

The Z51 is a handling package, nothing to do with straight line acceleration. Same goes for the Grand Sport. The are both equally as quick. Only think that could change is if one or both had the dual mode exhaust option, which bumps them from 430, to 436...

Thanks for the responses pretty darn interesting info. I believe the vette will do a better job of getting the power to the ground, plus being an auto might tip the scales. Not to mention this cold weather is really making it hard for me to lay down all my power so my extra horses may not even be able to play a factor if its a chilly sat afternoon.
This round should be interesting, I do have a boss intake sitting in my game room up my sleeve for rd 2. (and hopefully some warmer temps)
The 2.73 indicates the Z51 gear, however the car wasn't a Z51, as I special ordered the car with that gear and had it built that way. The DA that night was in the negatives which helped with the runs. I even made one run that same night at 117.96 mph. The car ran 12.2-12.3 in regular DA.

But is that because of the car, or because of the amount of heat and humidity in Florida?
1/4 mile times can be as much as .5 seconds faster on a NA car if the humidity and barometric pressure is low and the temperatures are mild compared to high humidity, barometric pressure, and high temps.

We get nice cool nights with good D/A during the winter. I am in central not southern Florida.

I'm too new to Mustangs to know how yours would do with those mods but my 08 Vette (stock) definitely pulled harder than the 5.0. That LS3 is no joke. Probably gonna be a drivers race.

Your only advantage is that the Corvette is an automatic transmission. The Corvette is lighter and will out handle your Mustang very easy on the Curves unless he is a bad driver. Remember he has an excellent suspension Z51 and starting on 2008 the Corvette had more HP. Enjoy driving behind him.
