Default Tons of tiny paint chips @ just 17k?

I recently bought a used 2012 Shelby SVT GT-500, I noticed today after washing it how many tiny paint chips are all over the hood, bumper, side fenders, and even magically the TRUNK? They are very small but what should I do about this? Take it up with Ford or just take it to a very nice polishing\detailing shop? I've never had a vehicle with such low mileage and so many chips, my prior vehicles the FJ Cruiser TRD and the Challenger SRT I both put 58k on and they barely had any chips at all...

Sounds like that could have been caused by the previous owner. Take to a Ford dealer and get their opinion.

What color is it? Years ago I had a Victory Red S-10. Paint was worthless; inside 10k the truck had 100 stone chips.

Owning two Fords today, I have a Sterling Grey F150 and a Deep Impact Blue Mustang. The DIB 'stang is gorgeous, but the paint is probably half as durable as the grey on the F150. The car had under 100 miles when I got my first stone chip that went all the way to the metal in the fender, and you can't walk adjacent to the car without putting clear coat scratches in it. I've already purchased and used touch up paint from the factory, applied Meguiar's Ultimate Polish and Ultimate Wax (x2 coats) to the car when it had 500 miles, and I plan to do this twice per year as long as I own the car.

I'm going to enjoy the heck out of it for a few years. I'm going to Midnight Special the Hades out of it when it comes time to trade it in. Then next time around it is white, grey or silver only.

It's black, like all my cars have been. I'll let Ford look at it, I don't understand how paint chips can get on your trunk and roof. Do you guys think it is worth polishing? Some are deep (easily feel them with finger, mainly the ones on the bumper) others not so much, so I figure a good polishing would get those out.

Seems if it is paint chips, and the paint is that bad, then Ford should def cover it and after that I'd clear-bra the heck outta everything.

Beautiful car. I'd certainly talk to a dealer, although they obviously aren't itching to warranty stuff like that. But yes, I would apply a very mild polish and whatever wax does it for you. Might be a great time for Zaino if you're a fan. And if you're willing to have the car painted, you could obviously have it repaired and the paint protection film applied stat.

Are they on the roof too? Could it be hail damage?

Sounds like the previous owner followed other cars too closely.

Beautiful car. If it's actual chips and through the paint then polishing won't do anything. Touch up paint followed by wet sand followed by polishing. Hope it's not that bad because it is a beautiful car. Good luck.

Good luck, but I doubt if Ford will warranty paint chips. My guess is that they are going to call it normal wear & tear. Let us know how you make out.

I'm on my 3rd black s197 Mustang and the only problem I've had with the black paint is keeping it clean.

I know paint chips, I live on a gravel road. Paint chips on the trunk and sides are caused by your tires "pitching" bits of stone in the air. You will also get stones chipping paint on the fender tops from the same cause. Get front fender splash guards from American Muscle, got them on the BOSS, work great.

Some paint batches are worse than others for chipping. I had a black 2004 Mustang GT and a Black 2004 Corvette at the same time. The Mustang's paint was very chip resistant and scratch resistant, the Corvette was a chip magnet as you described. After 30K miles the nose of the Corvette was "sandblasted" with chips, then I hit the deer. I had the 'Vette's body repaired at my local Ford dealer, he did an incredible job, paint never chipped again, it was very durable.
So my feeling is, you have a bad batch of paint on your car.

I think its just luck more than anything else. I just picked up three nasty rock-chips on my hood lip this past weekend; only 5000 km on the odometer. Three all in the same general region. Must have been a cluster of rocks that hit me. Two down to the primer, and a third (about 2mm in area) down to the bare metal. I filled them up with paint and eliminated the blob with Langka. Doesn't look perfect but better than before. I'm getting a clear bra put on it later this week.

My 2011 V6 never picked up any rock chips of that magnitude over the three years 35000km of driving. It was however, "sand blasted". It was covered with thousands of small (pin-*****) sized chips from sand and/or salt. Also had dozens of larger chips down to the primer.

Luck of the draw man. It depends on where you drive (highway or local) and whether there is a lot of construction going on.

Well before we blame the previous owner, black is a very hard finish and color to maintain. The slightest chip will stick out. To be honest, rock chips are a common occurrence where I live. I usually stock up on factory touch up paint. The only fault I can see for the previous owner is not repairing them.

I say get an estimate and have it repaired (especially on a GT500). After you fix them invest an extra 100 bucks on THIS.

Why would Ford be responsible for rock chips? I know that sounds more insulting than I try to be but peeling/rust yep their fault, chips not so much.
