Question 2002-2004 mustang gt heads and cam swap

recently, i have browsed the wonderful internet for some new heads and a set of cams for my GT.. i found a set up i wanted. (stage 2 fox lake heads and stage 2 cams from Comp).. i talked to the place i usually get my installations done (cjponyparts) and they said that the set-up wouldnt work because of piston to valve clearance. should i shave my pistons? is there anyone out there that has shaved your pistons?

Usually they just clearance the pistons (take a slice out [fly cut] that allows the valves to clear).

A smaller cam would save this, and would not have the rougher idle that you get from the larger cam. 262 grind is the next smaller standard grind from Comp Cams.

Discuss this with CJ. Perhaps degreeing the cams would also help with clearance. Make sure they know you are planning to use the 270 cams, NOT the larger 278's (these always need extra clearance). Perhaps there is another path. Cometic steel head gaskets might give you enough room to avoid the problem.

Fly cuts on the pistons is no big deal, but WILL add to the labor and maching costs.

You should not need to fly cut your pistons with that cam. Maybe with stage III heads. If the shop degree's the cams in correctly their should be no problem. But I would suggest using VT cams. I have had both comp cams 262's and 270's both where off bank to bank which made them harder to install and the 270's cam ground advanced which I think they quit doing. The shop didn't have any problems with my VT stage III blower cams but they had a lot of problems with the 270's.

I agree, that's my experience as well. Its why I asked him to talk to them and make sure they knew he was going with the 270's, not the 278's.

Of course, maybe they know something about his particular motor that we don't. If he comes back with more data, we'll see what is what.
