That's too many for an unladen car sitting at rest. The spring doesn't have anywhere to go to handle weight transfer during operation.
I wonder if they could have been installed upside down? Progressive springs might do this in that case.
(Progressive rate springs are designed to get progressively harder to compress as the load increases during active driving and their total length becomes shorter. Regular rated springs have a linear reaction based upon their design).
They could also be progressive springs designed to work that way, though they would be the first I've seen that act that particular way (progressive springs usually have the strongest spring action at the bottom, and the softest at the top, but I've not seen any with 6 coils compressed fully in that situation).
