Default Forged Shortblock

Alright im starting to do a lil research on build shortblock. Looking into DSS and MMR blocks so i can do more engine work to me car in the future without blowing her up since im kinda getting close to my limit. I want to run more boost on my KB blower, and do stage 3 heads after shortblock. But my question is, will i notice anything from just the forged parts? Say we built it and leave everything else how it is, stock heads and same boost on blower, how much power will i get from it? Ive heard ya can get like 20-30hp out of just the shortblock.

I have heard similar, and read the same. I have just never had the pleasure of seeing it.

Default Limiting factor

In general, your KB will run out of headroom with the stock internals (rods will probably go first if you over tax the motor), but it might be the valvetrain that quits right after (particularly if you raise the rev limit too far and end up with valve float).

Forged goodies will help the motor survive the strain, but forged parts will not increase power unless you add timing, boost, flow, etc to make that happen.

A Stroker short block would, of course, add power, since you are also adding a little displacement, but the 4.6 stock blocks just were never meant to grow much from stroking - you hit the glass ceiling at about 9%, or at something like 5.0 litres.

The higher quality cobra short blocks (particularly those featuring the better castings) are the way to go if you can stand the cost.

This is just a real brief overview, but I hope it sheds a little light.

So im just looking to run more boost and add more power without having to worry about blowing her up. So should i not worry about the shortblock? The price isnt too bad really espcially for the cobra block holding 900hp! And its still gonna be a while before i have this, i jsut like to reasearch these kinda things a long as i can before i get into it like i did my KB.

I'd plan to rework the whole motor at the same time. Get the heads reworked with better cams to match your power goals and style of driving, and replace the springs and retainers with upgrades that will handle the pressure needed to keep everything happy.

Forged bottom end in that top quality block would match everything up nicely, and give you room to grow with boost (though there is always a limit somewhere, you just have to adjust your limits to match your goals).

What I'm saying is to remember you are building a CAR, not just a block or even an engine. More power capability in one place MUST be matched with the correct engineering somewhere else.

Building a bullt-proof block without the correct cams, springs and valvetrain just means you will wreck the heads or get a lot less out of the engine than it is capable of delivering.

Just a note: You should be looking DOWNSTREAM from the engine when you do this. The next weak link will be the clutch and transmission, as well as the suspension and body-stiffness of the car.

Plan overall - look at the big picture - and you will have a much more successful result.

Alright appreciate your help man. Im more than a couple mods from doin anymore serious engine work for now. My main focus over the next couple months is more suspension so i can hook up better and then a new clutch and flywheel. Man building up a car is EXPENSIVE haha.
